Hello all once again!

I've chipping all of my current cars, both autoart and scalextric cars, but for some reason I have 2 cars that when placed on track, will just go flat out without any imput from the controls where as the rest are fine. What woul be the cause of this? Has the chips gone already?

Hi,
That is a possibility ...... another one might be that you have a short circuit in the wiring, so I would check each piece of wire for damage or pinching, solder blobs touching or very fine slivers of wire touching.

Just had the same problem with one of my cars.
It was a blown N0 device (mosfet). Have a look here:RichG: Upgrade your SSD InCar controller and go to post #16. So far I had three blown up mosfets - in each case there was a little bump on the N0 device.
I have repaired my chip using Rich's method of adding a stronger dual mosfet. (remove P0 also to do it).

Just had this happen myself too. Chipped my first car AOK. Second just goes full speed. No Shorts etc.

Not sure what a mosfet is, so I'll check the link above to RichG's post.....................

I replaced the chip in the car that ran at full sped, and it worked fine. So the chip must have blown, but there is no physical sign of the blown chip as described in the thread by RichG, or the pic above by GregK. Strangly though, I have just fired up the track today, put that same car on the track and the motor now just seems to run at a very slow speed (not enough to make the car move though) and will not respond to the controller.

I have also chipped a third car, which drives perfectly but does not register any lap times or change lanes. This is trickier than I imagined and could get costly if I keep screwing up!

Any help would greatly appreciated.

one thing to check if you are missing lap counts is that the guide flag is not one of the blue one's that used to be fitted to cars a few years back,that is why when you buy a solder in chip you get a pack of black guide flags thrown in.

If you could supply a list of the cars that you are having trouble with and some pic's that would help to try and solve your problems.

Im no master electrician but have ever only had one car/chip give problems in 4 years of running digital and have chipped many cars,so i would say your having a bit of bad luck,im sure it can all be sorted though..

This can be due to a bad controller; I had one and the motor would drive the back wheels but only if you lifted them off the track. It made a low pitched humming noise.

Hi GregK. Re the car that was fine yesterday but duff today, I don't think its the controller, as that is running the other car just fine. I popped out and purchased 4 more chips, so I will re-chip it and see what happens.

The third car I mention above is a Slot It P4. She drives just great but will not register laps or change lanes. I did have to extend the led wires though. I wonder If that screwed up the led? I am going to re-chip it now and see what happens.

You can check if the LED is working by looking at it with a digital camera with car placed on a powered up track. Also make sure that you connected the LED the right way round when you extended the leads.

What is the max RPM of the Slot.It P4 ........ a Scalextric chip will just about cope with 20k.

All Slot.it cars come with 21k+ motor.

that's why the chips are blowing,before i joined on here i chipped a scaley aston with a 30K blue motor and it shut down after 2 laps,if you pushed it accross the pb it would come up with id number and lap time.

Slot-it cars should have slot-it chips fitted or fit a scaley motor into the slot-it chassis or have the scaley chips modified by gmyers to handle up and beyond what a slot-it chip can do....

If you run mag free then there is a chance that the standard scaley chip will be ok with a slot-it motor,i shell be finding out once i have finished routed track.....

Hmmmm. What rpm engines come in revell cars? Or the Scaley GT40? The scaley GT40 has not blown since I chipped it, only the Revell Corvette and that doesn't seem to rev any higher than the 40. At a guess I say the revell motor is very basic olde world scalextric. I Re-chipped that last night and it runs fine again. If it blows again I will change all the motors to scalextric.

As for the Slotit P4, it runs lap after lap. Hasn't blown the chip, just won't register laps etc. I took the old LED off and replaced it with the one from a blown chip and it made no difference!

the problem with the slot it maybe the guide.
I chipped an Audi slot it a few years ago and had the same
problem it came with a white guide and ssd needs a black
one to register laps. As a quick fix i got a black permanant
marker and coloured it in and that work ok untill it wore off.
Also the guide and the car sat very low on the track and the
led was not seen by the lane changer so in the end I put the
older style scalextric guide with a long stem on which made
the car work with ssd but it was not very good at going round
corners.
I would think you could buy a slot it guide for scalextric digita,l
have not look for ages, maybe Mr flippant knows or bigbird know,
they are very up to date with things.

Hi Ian,

All my guides are black. Admittedly the sloy-it guide is a slightly different shape to the scaley ones.

I am beginning to think that I have a bad batch. Just chipped a Revell Cobra Daytona. My best install yet. The saloon chip fits neatly over the front axle ahead of the motor and there is space in the chassis floor in front of the guide, to mount the LED. Guess what? Placed it on the track. Nada, nothing. No sounds, no life whatsoever. I am going to swap out that chip now. If that works, then I am writing a strong complaint to Hornby.

Sounds like you are getting well into the chipping thing.

I would try the polite way 1st and contact scalextric direct,
they are usually very helpful. They replaced several blown /
defect chips for me without hesitation. There number is
01843 233525 or +44 1843 233525 from outside the UK

You can always go down the letter route later.
just one thought I would imagine they are quite busy so
patience is a virtue.

Yes I am getting into this chipping now. The trouble with doing something new, is that when the finished project doesn't work, it undermined my confidence. Once it became clear that it wasn't my chipping ability that was flawed, just a few defective chips, I somehow felt less frustrated and willing to continue. So I chipped two more cars last night, well one new, a Fly Lola and re-chipped the Revell Daytona Coupe.
