We are excited to announce that we are live on our new forum platform!

It’s been a long time coming. Let’s face it. Sometimes older forum technology lags behind other parts of the internet. Although seeing the same format for a long time is comforting, the member experience shouldn’t include dealing with outdated, unsafe, slow software.

The transition to a new platform will never be 100% smooth but the days of dealing with out of date forum software are over. We have teams dedicated to building a world-class community for you. The development has been steady with regular software releases since May 2019. Asking members for feedback and coming up with ideas for improvement is what we want.

Speed and Reliability Are Key
No one should have to wait for information. This site has been built to be much faster and more reliable, period.

New Homepage Experience
Our algorithm will serve a personal customized feed based on your prior engagement with content on the site. If you’ve liked and or commented, or are following certain topics that are of interest to you, similar content will appear at the top of the homepage.

Search
We have introduced new search algorithms, powered by an industry-leading AI platform, to help you find information faster. We plan to roll out new features to continue improving search, and to power many additional areas of the forum.

Due to the volume of content, our search platform may take some time to complete indexing over the first few days after migrating. During this process, you may see a limited number of posts until indexing has been completed. We appreciate your patience.

Finding Your Way Around
We have made the design clean and simple to use. Near the upper right-hand corner of the community, you will see navigation icons.

The first icon is for what’s new on the site.

Clicking on it, by default, will take you to new unread posts. On that page, you can click on additional tabs as well, such as Popular, if you prefer to view active topics.

Clicking the list icon next to “NEW” will bring you to the full forum listing.

Clicking your avatar will give you a drop-down menu for all things related to your account.

You can also navigate more by clicking the 3 vertical dots.

Dark Mode
We have introduced Dark Mode. One of our favorite features allows you to access the site with a power-saving, and easier on the eyes dark mode. You can access it in the drop-down menu under the 3 vertical dots.

Save Bookmarks
Now you can save your favorite discussion threads and posts! Bookmarks are a handy way to remember and easily find great content or stuff you want to read later.

We also wanted to make it easier for new users to understand the lingo of forums. We have cleaned up various language to more commonly recognized phrases including:
  • Following - Thread subscriptions, and Watched are now known as Following
  • Conversations - Private Messages or PMs are now conversations and can be accessed from the user avatar drop-down in the main navigation
  • Showcase - Showcase is designed for users to "showcase" items/projects through the use of uploaded images, text descriptions and custom content categories. It’s a way to visually and textually provide detailed information on the content you wish to share. The showcase would be similar to a catalog, whereas the gallery would be like a photo album. It can be accessed from the drop-down menu with the 3 dots.
Take a tour and look around! Check out the Help section for some quick FAQs about the new platform.

Please keep all feedback, questions, concerns, requests for help, etc. regarding the new platform right here in this Feedback thread. This will help us make sure not to miss a request for help and also let us pass along your thoughts to our Product team. The Admins and I will be here to help along the way taking note of your comments.

Can someone tell me how to add a user to my "ignore" list? On the old forum my account was set to hide posts from one of the forum's users, but the upgraded forum says "You are not currently ignoring any members" and I cannot find a way to add someone to my list.
The commercialisation has already started, not even subtle, they went straight in with jack boots on and a sledgehammer...

If you want to get rid of the useless right hand waste of space column then you need to subscribe and pay $20 to remove it...really? So every time you visit the site you lose 1/3 of screen real-estate to the 'gimme $20' now nag screen?
I too would like to know how to reclaim the blank space on the right side of my screen. In my case 25% of the width of a 1920x1200 monitor is blank.
Just 10 edits a week? That's crazy. My typo edits almost certainly exceed that.

I've just discovered that images aren't displayed at full size when the forum is viewed on a screen that's bigger than a phone. Why not? The whole point of viewing the forum on a large screen is so that I can see decent sized photos. If I wanted to look at tiny images, I'd view the forum on my phone.

Has something changed today with the SlotForum title bar? I'm (almost) sure that until today, the title bar disappeared as I scrolled down the thread, but now it changes to a shallower version rather than the full depth one, but remains visible and wasting valuable screen space, no matter how far I scroll down the page.

The amount of screen space wasted by this new look is terrible. All style over substance, designed to appeal to who? Infants?

This is what I see when I first view a thread:

This is what I see when I scroll down the page. I know I'm on SlotForum. I don't need a bloody great banner permanently telling me so and wasting space.

It looks the same to me as it was when it went live?
Perhaps it is and I'm mistaken, but my frustration remains. Towards the bottom right of a scrolled page is a return-to-top arrow, surely a better use of space than a non-scrolling fixed banner.

A modern design principle a fixed banner may be, but design principles and good design aren't the same. A shallower non-scrolling banner, or one placed in an upper corner of the screen, would seem to me to be a better compromise. Most of this site's current banner is nothing more than wasted and unusable space. After all, we wouldn't accept this nonsense on other sites where viewing space is important. Would we?

The size of most things including the sidebar or the top bare will scale depending on how large your window is.
Yes, it does indeed scale. The wrong damn way. With a smaller window, the top bar becomes even bigger. It's an appalling way to design a page.

The navigation bar is fairly handy even still being there.
Not for me it isn't. This is a case of the site admins telling its users that the users' preferences are wrong and the designers' are right.

It's ironic that VerticalScope's own website doesn't have this appalling design. No non-scrolling top bar there. One design rule for one, another for the rest, I guess.

My main gripe would be the adverts sitting in the centre of the reading pane... that is a real pain...
I have, over the years, trained myself to ignore advertising whether it be on the internet or TV... now I know where the adverts lurk on the site I can deal with it.
Should get ad blocker I suppose!
I use AdBlockPlus and don't see any adverts, as illustrated by the screenshots in my earlier post. It works very well and very unobtrusively for me. Best of all, it's free.

Thanks for the reply, Gerrit.

I fully appreciate that the old forum had many flaws and that this upgrade was needed. I appreciate too that SlotForum has many members and, consequently, many individual preferences, which makes designing something that satisfies everyone an almost impossible task.

However, the nature of this forum is that we talk in detail about our interests and projects, rather than the endless "Cool", "you're de man", "Like" puff that litters Facebook and Twitter. We often illustrate our discussions with photos, and in the world of small slot cars, where detail is valued, the larger the photo, the better the reader experience in most cases, so avoiding wasted space can only be a good thing.

I can't speak for others, but my preference would be for a scrolling navigation bar coupled with a return-to-top arrow once the page has been scrolled.

If it's felt necessary for a non-scrolling top bar to be used, I'd prefer a very shallow one, probably with nothing more on it than a menu icon and perhaps a "new posts" button. I see no need for a permanently visible search bar. I and, I suspect, many other users, follow discussions as they evolve over days and weeks. I don't need instant access to a search function.

Thanks for listening. It's appreciated.

I've just noticed that all of the address and contact details, website urls and other relevant information is missing from every club's entry in the Clubs forum.

This needs to be rectified sooner rather than later, as this was a very valuable resource and one of the few ways members and browsers of SlotForum could find places to race.

Please attend to this quickly.

Any progress with this, Cricket? There's still no information visible about any of the clubs listed in the Clubs forum, and no space for the Club rep to add the missing information himself.
Was the information a description previously?
It varied. It wasn't a sticky, but a space at the top of each club's thread-index page, above the thread list, displaying the club's contact details, address, phone numbers, opening times, website url and so on.

I just tried waybackmachine to see if any relevant pages are archived there, but there aren't any. I presume that you have a back-up copy of the old SlotForum site and will be be able to see how the old layout worked.

p.s. one more thing, did anyone notice that SF is now listed as "since 1970", which seems more like the 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970 instead of the start of SF in 2003?! Devil is in the details 😅
I guess my only pet peeve so far is that the title of the page is wrong (also going to ignore the incorrect pluralisation);

275506

Surely the correct title is "SlotForum" or SlotForum International"?
I can look into that.

- Cricket
Have you looked yet?

For goodness sake, these are such simple changes, why are they taking so long to implement? Someone managed to use their keyboard and change "since 1970" to "since 2002", but failed to change Slot Cars Forum to SlotForum.

These may be trivial matters, but detail is important. If nobody can be bothered with the detail, it doesn't fill me with any confidence that anyone can be bothered at all.

Upgrade to Premium? Are you having a laugh? The basic version hasn't been fixed yet.

The title of the site is not always the same as the URL. This is the title they selected for the site.

- Cricket
I don't give a stuff what title "they" selected for the site. The site's title is SlotForum, or at a push SlotForum International. That's what it was called when it started, that's what it's been called until now, and that's what it should continue to be called. It isn't Slot Cars Forum.

Take a moment to browse through our Community FAQs and let us know if you have any questions.
If the "dedicated person" overseeing the incompetent messing about that is currently going on with this site has no intention of doing anything other than posting screenshots and the supremely pathetic "Take a moment to browse through our Community FAQs and let us know if you have any questions", then that "dedicated person" might just as well tell us now that they have no intention, or no power or ability, to do anything at all other than fob us off with nonsense.

This thread runs to nine pages of questions. Why on earth don't you start fixing the issues that have caused our questions, instead of asking us stupid ones?

The community offers push notifications if your browser's permissions allow it.
Who is the "community" that allows push notifications, what are push notifications, and how can I join the community that allows push notifications so that I can push the notifications where the sun doesn't shine?

I am looking into this.
Is anything happening with this? The original request was made 18 days ago and nothing has happened yet. A lot of very valuable information has been lost and needs to be recovered.

I am beginning to wonder if any of us are wanted here.
VS probably don't care. They're salesmen selling advertising space. For them, it's all about numbers, not content. So long as their forums have plenty of posts and plenty of members, they can continue to sell their platform to advertisers. A churn in membership is irrelevant. If you or I stop posting, we'll still be counted as a member.

I doubt very much that an advertiser would actually study in detail the conversations on this forum, so is unlikely to be aware of the depth of disappointment and frustration felt by many of us at the shambolic way that the switch to VS's forum software has been implemented, and the apparent inability of Cricket or anyone else at VS to rectify most of the problems.

Just look at the way that the new-look SlotForum is littered everywhere with bold references to the volume of posts and members. Content is irrelevant, numbers matter. Ironically, our complaints here add positively to those numbers.

"Look at these numbers! Aren't they big?! Advertise with us!"
