We are excited to announce that we are live on our new forum platform!

It’s been a long time coming. Let’s face it. Sometimes older forum technology lags behind other parts of the internet. Although seeing the same format for a long time is comforting, the member experience shouldn’t include dealing with outdated, unsafe, slow software.

The transition to a new platform will never be 100% smooth but the days of dealing with out of date forum software are over. We have teams dedicated to building a world-class community for you. The development has been steady with regular software releases since May 2019. Asking members for feedback and coming up with ideas for improvement is what we want.

Speed and Reliability Are Key
No one should have to wait for information. This site has been built to be much faster and more reliable, period.

New Homepage Experience
Our algorithm will serve a personal customized feed based on your prior engagement with content on the site. If you’ve liked and or commented, or are following certain topics that are of interest to you, similar content will appear at the top of the homepage.

Search
We have introduced new search algorithms, powered by an industry-leading AI platform, to help you find information faster. We plan to roll out new features to continue improving search, and to power many additional areas of the forum.

Due to the volume of content, our search platform may take some time to complete indexing over the first few days after migrating. During this process, you may see a limited number of posts until indexing has been completed. We appreciate your patience.

Finding Your Way Around
We have made the design clean and simple to use. Near the upper right-hand corner of the community, you will see navigation icons.

The first icon is for what’s new on the site.

Clicking on it, by default, will take you to new unread posts. On that page, you can click on additional tabs as well, such as Popular, if you prefer to view active topics.

Clicking the list icon next to “NEW” will bring you to the full forum listing.

Clicking your avatar will give you a drop-down menu for all things related to your account.

You can also navigate more by clicking the 3 vertical dots.

Dark Mode
We have introduced Dark Mode. One of our favorite features allows you to access the site with a power-saving, and easier on the eyes dark mode. You can access it in the drop-down menu under the 3 vertical dots.

Save Bookmarks
Now you can save your favorite discussion threads and posts! Bookmarks are a handy way to remember and easily find great content or stuff you want to read later.

We also wanted to make it easier for new users to understand the lingo of forums. We have cleaned up various language to more commonly recognized phrases including:
  • Following - Thread subscriptions, and Watched are now known as Following
  • Conversations - Private Messages or PMs are now conversations and can be accessed from the user avatar drop-down in the main navigation
  • Showcase - Showcase is designed for users to "showcase" items/projects through the use of uploaded images, text descriptions and custom content categories. It’s a way to visually and textually provide detailed information on the content you wish to share. The showcase would be similar to a catalog, whereas the gallery would be like a photo album. It can be accessed from the drop-down menu with the 3 dots.
Take a tour and look around! Check out the Help section for some quick FAQs about the new platform.

Please keep all feedback, questions, concerns, requests for help, etc. regarding the new platform right here in this Feedback thread. This will help us make sure not to miss a request for help and also let us pass along your thoughts to our Product team. The Admins and I will be here to help along the way taking note of your comments.

I got a scare at first when I clicked on my bookmarked link for the forum. Message read 'Oops! We ran into some problems. The requested forum could not be found'.
Thought SlotForum was a goner for a moment, something similar happened years ago on a car forum I was a member on, just disappeared forever, never to be seen again. 😎
Had some time to look around ok i know i,m old but there does seem to be a lot on here to take in, and so much of it is very old to be in the fore front of items , and where do i find friends ? , really not sure about the amount on here but willing to give it a go.:giggle:

So I opened Slotforum tonight and it felt like I had entered a nightmare, bit Like the Laurie Anderson song:

I came home today
And both our cars were gone.
And there were all these new pink
Flamingoes arranged in star patterns
All over the lawn.

Then I went into the kitchen
And it looked like a tornado had hit.
And then I realized I was in the wrong House

Lyrics "Talk Normal" by Laurie Anderson.

So my question is...Am I?

Its like you have a subscription on the Herald Tribune and all of a sudden the Sun gets pushed through your letterbox.
And as a reasonably frequent contributor of content.....WHTF has happend to all my older post with hundreds of images that are no longer displayed in my topics.?
(This is just one example)
This used to happen before (images not being displayed) so I reverted to posting them as attachments. It was a work around, but it worked. at least they were displayed properly.
Now all you see are thumbnails.

This might be an improvement for VS...but you're "upgrade" has just rendered hundreds of hours that I've spend posting here...completely useless.😨

With frustrated regards
Tamar

Hey Tamar
I am not sure if they have changed something, but after clicking on the "are thumbnails" link in your post above I can see the pictures at a very good size on your post. For sure they are not thumbnails.
My frustration is with the new posts in thread feature: first off I was not able to log in and I had to reset my password. Once I did that, it seems that all threads have new unread content for me which I am sure is not the case. The other thing I miss is to just from the thread link to the last unread post. Is this still possible? Because so far when i click on an unread thread or thread with new content I get to the first post.

The commercialisation has already started, not even subtle, they went straight in with jack boots on and a sledgehammer...

If you want to get rid of the useless right hand waste of space column then you need to subscribe and pay $20 to remove it...really? So every time you visit the site you lose 1/3 of screen real-estate to the 'gimme $20' now nag screen?

Maybe I didn't notice the Pendles discount or any of the other value-add premium membership that existed before? Now it's 'gimme $20 bucks or I'll **** with your experience....'?

If you were in any doubt before...

Added to my earlier concerned post

[ ATTACH type="full"]
So I browsed to some of my recent and also some of my older post. One bit of good news is that (at least from now) I'm able to "edit" posts beyond the period previously allowed under the "old" forum software. So I could fix some of the Posts where attachments displayed as thumbnails by changing formats, changing [ ATTACH] to [ ATTACH type="full"] in the BB Code.
Still a lot of work, I would have preferred tech support to have handled this issue correctly by making [ ATTACH type="full"] the default setting for all attachment that have been added/included in a post.
At least, that's the default setting you now get with the new "direct image upload"

HTTP VS HTTPS
So I can understand that things change constantly on the internet, hence FB snapchat, tinder, stories, et all. Unlike print, there seems to be less and less demand for content that lasts more han a minute or with more than 160 tokens. But not on SF. This site has been a welcome archive since ages (centuries in internet time).
So why the ban on Image links with URL's starting with HTTP instead of HTTPS ?!

So I'm not speaking just for my personal posts here...does VS have any idea how many broken image links banning HTTP Image URLs will create site wide

Oh and P.s.p.s. the new smileys suck

Hello Gio

I've corrected most of my recent post by changing the BB code to full display for the attachments. Seems like we can edit bolder posts so each member can fix their own posts...but they should not be needing to be fixed in the first place.
Same goes for not displaying images hosted on older http websites (like all my images)
I see. So if you can do this editing then they should be able to run a script to it for us.
For the images not being displayed, I think this is more to do with the browser security settings.
Not happy with the change but really damned angry at the ads.
Ads seem to be the new hostage demand: put up with them or give us money.

No because than you, the user/reader could disable or over rule the security setting. For instance Slotforum was considered an "unsafe site" for years.
No the problem is in the settings of the BB code/ Admin tool on what type of URL's they will or will not allow.

For instance if you want to add an Image to your post you can choose Drag & drop (like adding an attachment) of link to URL.
Now the pop up menu even starts with an text example "http://" for the url..but it won't accept http url's try it and you get a "sorry something went wrong" message.
But add a https url and no problem...like this

Grunz if you click on the time link in the post link like before it will take you to the last post or click on the Jump to latest button on the right of the thread header when in the post.
Just discovered that if you edit your post, including old ones, if you click on the picture you can resize it to what you like by dragging the corners although it looks like it is just a resize of the smaller picture. You can also reinsert the original full size picture back in to the post.
Can someone tell me how to add a user to my "ignore" list? On the old forum my account was set to hide posts from one of the forum's users, but the upgraded forum says "You are not currently ignoring any members" and I cannot find a way to add someone to my list.

I too would like to know how to reclaim the blank space on the right side of my screen. In my case 25% of the width of a 1920x1200 monitor is blank.

Granted there are some functional improvements compared to the "Old" Software, but the chosen default setting, the lay-out and sizing of the navigation..I just opened SF on my phone.
Clearly VS seems to have chosen Mobile devices as their primary Display target...not my choice though.
Anyhow, wil await a reply from the admin department on how they're going to fix displaying http links and images, and if a script to automatically restore image attachments that were previously posted is a possibility.
Also previously, once an image was attached or uploaded to the forum you could re-use that image in another post by simply copying the image location.
That's a no go in the current setting, no linking to previously attached images. You need to upload them for each singular post.

Clearly VS has overlooked where the real value of SF lays. Yes its about what people share here on their beloved hobby, and as such it has fierce competition from other social media platforms that focus on instant gratification of "look @ me".
But the real value of what makes SF unique...is what has been shared over the past decades...and images are a major part of that heritage.

Oh just discovered that there is a limit to what you can "edit" ..I just reached it.
Got the message as I was trying to "fix" some images in a post.
Apparently you're allowed to "edit" 10 post per week.

So even if I wanted to take the "effort" to restore some of my older posts..lets see....I've got 2k of posts something like 91 Topics I started.
Lets do a low estimate...lets say I would want to "fix" 1/4th of my posts so 500 post would take me..50 weeks ?!?! 😤
That is discarding any typo's made in new post !!! 🤨
Just 10 edits a week? That's crazy. My typo edits almost certainly exceed that.

I've just discovered that images aren't displayed at full size when the forum is viewed on a screen that's bigger than a phone. Why not? The whole point of viewing the forum on a large screen is so that I can see decent sized photos. If I wanted to look at tiny images, I'd view the forum on my phone.
