Hey there!

Just got mine through the mail today and it is very nice indeed...

except there seems to be a hole where the gear shift should be, is it supposed to be like this or was I just unlucky?

I just looked at mine, and it appeared to have a hole where the shifter would be. Upon closer examination though, the shifter is there. It is white (blended with interior), with a black dot on top (giving the appearance of a hole).
Check yours closer. It doesn't appear to be a separate piece, but rather it apprears to be molded with the console.

Uhhh, wait a minute. I just reread your title. Your talking about Fly's Vette, aren't you? I'm refering the the new Scalextric one. Sorry about that.

Yes I was refering to the Fly 'Vette. Apologies for being vague.

For anybody else who has the same problem there should be a gear shift and mine is now on it's way to me. Woohoo, means I'll be able to get out of first!!
