COVID-19 Lockdown Hobby Time with SSD RCS64 Slot.it Pace Cars

I have always wanted to record some variable speed Slot.it pace cars but never seem to get the time with work, sport, committee work & footy commitments etc.etc.

Now with the COVID-19 lockdown there is plenty of time at home of an evening so I had a play and recorded my first Slot.it pace car last night and had half a dozen races and they were really fun, although I only won a couple of the races.

Tonight I recorded a video of a quick 15 lap pace car race, I am always in awe of the RCS64 software when it comes to recording and perfecting variable speed pace cars on my twisty undulating track and there is only one re-calibration point at the Start/Finish line, use of the sectors is amazing.

The race in the video wasn't perfect, there were a couple of crashes etc. but when your stuck home alone with no where to go, racing other competitive cars is so much more fun than just doing laps

(which of course is still a lot of fun

)

Hope the video plays OK (can't seem to find the "how to" for inserting youtube videos to threads anymore)

Thank you for sharing, love it. You are the master of setting up RCS pace cars.

Hi thanks for your post band video.
I live in an area where there is little interest in slot car racing so no clubs near by. Therefore I regularly have to race against pace cars. I run five pace cars at the same time, this makes it even more interesting.

However , this meant that my circuit had to be designed to make programming the pace cars, easier. I.e no tight bends and not to many chicanes.
That aside it makes good fast racing.

enjoy your time at home and keep safe.

High praise there Minardi thanks, although there had to be a fair bit of mastery in system design/development & program coding before I got a chance to enjoy the functionality
thumbsup.gif
, that said the Sector functionality in RCS64 is just so cool to achieve car control with, it takes time with trial & error and testing & tweaking but that is part of the fun as well. If we ever get to multiple sectors to re-calibrate cars with instead of just the S/F line it would be insane

.

I have only had 1 day with RCS-O2 so far (borrowed controllers) but when I get my SCP-3 I plan to lose more time in that program as it develops.as well. Here's thinking of Northern Italy and the Slot.it team (and Europe generally, China, US, all of us really)

Lucky you Widders, putting the "horse before the cart"

& , I had my track built with all the ups & downs, hairpin turns, twists etc. and had to get the software to work making pace car driving easier on our track.

Thanks Leopard, it must have been the Hypnotic part that lead to me crashing so often and loosing the race

Well done Phil!

You are a Pro at Pace Cars!

Did you have a magnet in the Pace Car?

Enjoy,

Shad

Thanks Shad, I just had the standard magnet that comes with the Slot.it Audi LMP car plus whatever the motor provides. On my home made Magnet Marshall these Slot.it cars only register around 45-50 grams of magnetic down force which is pretty much magless racing by my standards

Great video, and great job calibrating that pace car!

WITH the traction magnet, that's what you measured? If so, your scale needs to be a little more sensitive.

Yeah, no... not pretty much magless. If you pull that magnet, what does it measure then?

45-50g would be a bit much for motor-only, but I've seen it with some of the special magnetic effect motors, especially anglewinder configuration. Even that is definitely NOT pretty much magless.
Mr F, you got me thinking re magnets so I ran a few tests on my homemade Magnet Marshall cross checking to the Tesla Meter readings. Now apparently there is no direct way to equate magnetic down force grams with magnetic field Tesla readings (there is a thread on here discussing this, but the science around that is way above my pay grade) but I thought measuring the same cars using both technics might show some interesting relationships.

Control car as I have measured the magnetic down force of this car on our club's actual Magnet Marshall and was within 10 grams of my homemade setup, 156 grams is on the money.

Next, same control car on the phone Tesla Meter app. showing 2437 Tesla's (whatever they are)

Next the Slot.it Audi LMP pace car with standard magnet in on the homemade magnet marshall showing 53 grams down force.

Now the the pace car on the Tesla Meter showing 441 Tesla's.

Now the Slot.it Audi LMP pace car with no magnet on the homemade marshall showing only 6 grams down force.

The Slot.it no magnet car on the Tesla Meter showing a reduced 233 Tesla's.

So far so good the reduced magnetic down force grams is in line with the reduced Tesla's.

Now let's compare the 2 magnets separately, first the control Scaley Torana car magnet stuck directly to the phone sensor spot with 3207 Tesla's.

And next the Slot.it magnet with a reduced 2413 Tesla's.

CONCLUSIONS - Scaley magnet stronger than Slot.it, 150 grams v 50 grams is a significant difference, Slot.it cars handle better with significantly reduced magnetic assistance.

I actuality drove the magless Slot.it on my track for the first time and yep very different, what I thought was basically magless turns out not to be so, it was just a lot less magnet.

That said I have now recorded a magless Slot.it pace car in RCS64 and it is only 2 seconds a lap slower than the one in the video, upside is I reckon I can get it quicker 😁

Very interesting. That still seems a bit low for that slot.it magnet. I'm going to do some of my own measuring, and I'm looking for the app you used but I'm not able to find that specific one. I realize my phone will probably have different numbers anyway, but I'd like to at least be using the same app. If you could share the actual name of the app and it's developer, that should help me find it.
Hi Mr F,

This is the thread where Tamar posted the Tesla Meter app reference.

https://www.slotforum.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=73786&p=2181649

I just searched tha App Store typing "Tesla Meter" and it came up as 3rd option and I recognised it from the picture comparing it to Tamar's post. Developer is Paul Bukhonov.
Interesting. I can find nothing with that name. Plenty of other options, but not that one. What an odd thing to restrict from the USA google play store. Ah well.
Oops the app developer is Pavel Bukhonov not Paul as per my earlier post. Here is a link to his app listings which says not all apps maybe available in all countries.

https://list.wiki/Apps_-_Pavel_Bukhonov

That surname looks Russian, I so much want to make a wise crack about US election year, Trump and the Russians, but I won't, or did I 😎 😁
Based on that page, the complete lack of a list of his apps for Android, and my inability to find any by him, I think he does not develop for Android. I'll probably try one of the multitude of other similar apps.
Now I figure out the new way to embed a video into a thread 👍

Is it possible to add sensors under the track for "stages" in both RCS64 and SSDC? That would help with pace cars I would imagine.

I have been running Revo Slot cars without a magnet, and with the amount of drifting they do, it's hard to record decent pace data - but they are so much more fun and challenging!

I am so lucky that my better half likes racing as much as I do - so there is always someone to race against :D

This was the idea behind Locator Pro (A Scorpius Wireless product), but the integration in SSDC is not publicly available, nor do I believe it progressed to the point of calibrated pace/ghost cars.

This is, in part, why I'm faffing about with multiple timing lines - specifically to allow for better pace car stuff as you can have a "sector 1 profile" and a "sector 2 profile" then a "sector 3 profile" and in effect reset multiple times and not just as you cross the line - e.g. stick a timing point just ahead of a hairpin, in time to brake for it

its not thee yet but it should work
