Dead strip - two lanes work, two dont

Hi all

We have just converted our 4 lane track from LED lights to Dead strip.

It's all installed and 'working - kind of.

The two middle lanes work flawlessly

The two gutter lanes only work if a car goes across them FAST. Going slow gets no trigger.

I've checked track connections and cannot see any wiring issues, and confirmed this by moving the problem to other lanes by swapping connections to the braid.

Then, I've eliminated any error in the resistor/capacitor setup by swapping lane input wiring (from serial port) and seeing that the problem switches lanes. SO it must be either the 10m long cable, serial port connector or computer itself. Worked fine when using lights though.

Or is there individual lane setup options I'm not aware of in RC that I may need to change?

I appreciate any help, before I completely rewire the computer cable.

Thanks

Steve

In rc try turning on trigger laps on low and also play around with the debounce setting. and the other thing to try is as a last resort would be to take the wires from a lane that works fine and connect them to a lane that does not work fine and see what happens.
Hi Mark

I have tried your latter suggestion, if you read my original post

What I cannot understand is why two lanes are fine and two are not. And yes, by connecting the lanes up differently, the problem moves with the wiring change.
Just to clarify, when you changed the wires, did the problem stay on the gutter lanes or did it move to the center lanes? If it moved to the outer lanes, maybe there's an issue with the pins on the arduino or the wires themselves?
Ok I spent much of today doing a completely new wire loom and basic interface
Exactly the same issue
Just the two middle lanes work
Frustrating much!!
It must be the PC

What is this Debounce setting and where do I locate it?

Steve
FYI I am using the Parallel Port, not an Arduino or Trackmate
Dead strip is 150mm long, 30mm break between braids

Ok the debounce seems to be for arduino so not sure if it is there for parallel port.
Here is an article on dead strips: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1axriebUWKkrUmpHSQsP8U1MTsd0fb65F/view?usp=sharing

The usual problem with dead strips is that they do not work properly when the cars are going fast. I do not think that your problem is due to the dead strips themselves. Since the problem moves when you switch the wires it is possible that your issue is with the computer's ports, it is easy to burn those out. The article includes a procedure for testing the ports.
Hello Steve,

The term "Debounce" relates to when a switch contact might bounce when operated and therefore cause the electrical current/signal to connect not once but twice or more. In the Race-Coordinator context it would be covered by the Race setting for minimum lap time. With a minimum lap time figure set the system will ignore secondary/multiple lap time signals that are below the set minimum. You would get an audible warning if that Driver audio has been set up but the false trigger would not register a new lap.

Hello Steve,

In your opening post you mention "serial port connector" but presumably you mean Parallel port or perhaps a Game port?

Can you plug back in the LEDs for the non-working channels and check if they work ok? Substituting an LED sensor in place of the deadstrip should be fairly easy and that will help with the diagnosis.

Hi Leo
Yes its the 25pin parallel or printer port, until now I have always known this type as a serial port - my bad
No, the old LED light trigger system and power for this has been removed when the track was relocated
Steve
So I got some heavy-hitters in to help, weve connected everything via Trackmate/USB and works perfectly
Perhaps some issue with the parallel port?
Thanks for assistance everyone
