I still have an order for a new digital wireless starter set. I’ve been looking for used sets to add additional track pieces. I noticed there is a difference in the control track unit from the one I have an order to an older 1/32 digital set from 2013. Can these two control track pieces interchange with each other? Is the functionality different?

Yes, they are interchangeable. Yes, they have different functions. The older one (lower pic) is commonly referred to as the BB, or Black Box. The new one is called the CU, or Control Unit. You pretty much don't want to bother using a BB if you have a CU. However, if you have a spare BB and power supply and controller(s), it could be used as an off track car programmer and testing area.
