Here is a very odd set Radiopista Elgi made by Ellegi from Italy. The cars are around 1/24th scale and are slotless. One car is a Ferrari 250 LM and the other is a Ford GT 40. This set was made in 1967.

bizarre! So, a "radio" controlled car in concept, but still locked in to the concept of an electrified track surface to power it. Looks like you are locked into a speed; you'd be busy enough just steering the car across and down the track with the pushbutton control, the multiple pickups keeping the power flowing as the car slides across them. Electromagnetically activated steering? The big question here is WHY??

The Ellegi "Radiopista" system is one of the weirdest I have seen, and it was quite expensive too, meaning its success in the marketplace was limited, making this set quite a rarity today. The cars are quite big too. I love the rubber band transmission and the splotchy solder joints...

Agreed, that does seem exceedingly complicated for racing two cars........

Wonderful Bernard - I have two of the cars and I see them around occasionally (often missing the four pickups), but have rarely seen the set!

As to why, well, my guess is that, since "slotless" in one way or another was always the ultimate goal of hobbyists, and R/C wasn't all that practical at the time, manufacturers tried several ways of developing more "realistic" driving cars...

There was also the Heathkit set from 1972, a bit smaller and more elegant, but still on a track at a time when R/C had become more feasible.

In any case, lovely to see this monster of a set - and I really like the boxtop graphics too - extremely groovy!
