F1 - A general conversation

With all the subject matter being raised in the various F1 topics on here I thought I would start a general topic for any this not related to a particular race.

I came across this a few days ago

The 1965 Dutch GP.

And it just goes to show that some things haven't really changed. This race was just about halfway through the season and Clark is already just about confirmed as champion and the gaps between the leading cars at the end? Raymond Baxter calls this a close and exciting race, wonder what he would make of current F1 races?

This was Jim Clark's 5th win out of six races, he also won the next race in Germany. The only one of the first six races he didn't win he didn't take part in, Monaco, which was won by Graham Hill in a BRM who won the next two races after Germany with Jackie Stewart and the Hill again. Honda broke the mould with their first win in the final race in Mexico with Richie Ginter.

Championship :-

1st Jim Clark 54 Points (all his 6 points scores were wins and all counted, best 6 finishes only counted)

2nd Graham Hill 40 points

3rd Jackie Stewart 33 points

4th Dan Gurney 25 points

5th John Surtees 17 points

6th Lorenzo Bandini 13 points

7th Richie Ginther 11 points

8th Mike Spence & Bruce McLaren 10 points

another seven drivers scored points and after that another 24 drives competed in at lease one of the ten races that year.

That's 40 drivers competing in total and another 11 who attempted to qualify.

The Constructors championship was ( only the 1st placed car in each team counted)

1st Team Lotus - Lotus-Climax 54 points (Jim Clark, Mike Spence and two other drivers )

2nd Owen Racing Organisation - BRM 45 points (Graham Hill & Jackie Stewart)

3rd Brabham Racing Organisation - Brabham-Climax 27 points (Jack Brabham, Dan Gurney, Denny Hulme and 1 other driver)

4th Ferrari - Ferrari 26 points (Lorenzo Bandini, John Surtess (8 races), Pedro Rodriguez (2 races) and 3 other drivers)

5th Cooper Car Comapny - Cooper_Climax 14 points (Bruce McLaren and Jochen Rindt)

6th Honda R & D Company - Honda 11 points (Ronnie Bucknum & Richie Ginther)

7th RRC Walker Racing Team - Brabham-BRM 5 points (Jo Siffert also Jo Bonnier in a Brabham - Climax)

8th Reg Parnell Racing - Lotus--BRM 2 points Richard Attwood, Innes Ireland, Mike hailwood, Chris Amon and 2 other drivers)

with 3 other teams racing and another 3 teams that did not qualify for any races.

I've never placed a bet on anything in my life, but if push came to shove, I'd probably put a fiver on Max as this year's most likely Champ. I feel no allegiance to any driver, or team but, with two aces trouncing all in their wake, even we oldies can feel our adrenaline glands being stoked from time to time. Close, eh!

Above, Keith Wells mentions the BTCC. Fast, furious, close, competitive, even, fair, well-humoured, colourful and rounded. It's all of these things yet, it does absolutely nothing for me. It dulls my senses. Tin-tops have usually given us the best racing, but my dismal demeanor reflects weariness at listening to the same old BS year in, year out, which is not the fault of the BTCC.

Jus' seen and heard it all before too many times.

Yer ol' cynic! Dab of Brasso will soon bring that up. You'll never notice. Good as new.

Are we talking here about the car or the guard rail?

Both, Rob. Brasso is good for lots of things, but I wouldn't recommend it on Weetabix on those occasions when you run out of milk/cider/whisky/ sherry.*

I read today that Marzipan has been complaining. He claims that his feet become overly hot whilst driving his Haas off.

Herr Steiner's chaps can't find anything wrong with the car to suggest a cause. Nothing wrong with young Schumacher's identical car, either.

A hothead with hot feet...

What about the one about The Three Bears?

Don't forget that UK clocks revert to GMT tonight, chaps. Don't want to miss the GP.
Mexico isn't until 5-7th November, start of three in a row

Ah, thanks Keith for your correction. Dunno why but I thought Mexico was this weekend. Usual senility probably to blame.

Your warning is still apposite though. It could have taken me a week to notice that anything was different.

Moss and Fangio in perfect harmony in the Argentine. If Eff 1 cars behaved like this today, there would be endless telemetry data suggesting likely causes, radio communication about tyres having gawn awf, and drivers telling all and sundry about the need to do a lot more work.

And how the commentators would get so noisy and excitable...

I have to laugh at today's drivers and commentators .they say he had a moment there and you look at the footage and the drivers hands move to the left or right about 5 mm back in the days gone buy their arms would be fully crossed one way then the other. .that's a full code brown scary moment .most of them now, if a car goes past 20 degrees sideways there on the radio to the pitlane asking what to do next .

Ross Brawn has said that sprint qualifying might become the norm. It will be normal, therefore, that an 18-lap sprint race will decide grid positions.

I've been under the impression for years that a modern Eff1 race is already a sprint. If youngsters at whom sprint qualy is aimed can't concentrate for more than an hour or so, perhaps their parents might like to learn the definition of 'discipline,' and pass it on to their "yeah no, no yeah" unruly progeny.

Oh, and perhaps they could teach them to speak properly at the same time.

Not an efficient means of communicating, is it?

Cool, groovy man, that really hit the spot, just chill man 😉 Can you dig it what that Ross dude is the man🤣

They are looking at keeping the sprint race but using qualy for main race grid. May not change next year as Ross doesn't want too many changes on top of all the regs changes but is hoping to increase the points awarded in the sprint and for more places, possible top 10 as main race and 1/3rd points. Also thing about changing the method used to set the grid in the sprint race, reverse order is a possibility or how about championship order?

All far out baby🐪

Hey! I’ve got a great idea! Why don’t we simply put a bunch of guys and girls in some flipping fast cars and let them race each other around a race track! None of this ”team orders” nonsense and anyone with the money can buy the winning car for, say, £250,000.00 That should keep them honest!

Come to think of it, letting drivers actually race each other? nah, it’ll never catch on!
