F1 - A general conversation

With all the subject matter being raised in the various F1 topics on here I thought I would start a general topic for any this not related to a particular race.

I came across this a few days ago

The 1965 Dutch GP.

And it just goes to show that some things haven't really changed. This race was just about halfway through the season and Clark is already just about confirmed as champion and the gaps between the leading cars at the end? Raymond Baxter calls this a close and exciting race, wonder what he would make of current F1 races?

This was Jim Clark's 5th win out of six races, he also won the next race in Germany. The only one of the first six races he didn't win he didn't take part in, Monaco, which was won by Graham Hill in a BRM who won the next two races after Germany with Jackie Stewart and the Hill again. Honda broke the mould with their first win in the final race in Mexico with Richie Ginter.

Championship :-

1st Jim Clark 54 Points (all his 6 points scores were wins and all counted, best 6 finishes only counted)

2nd Graham Hill 40 points

3rd Jackie Stewart 33 points

4th Dan Gurney 25 points

5th John Surtees 17 points

6th Lorenzo Bandini 13 points

7th Richie Ginther 11 points

8th Mike Spence & Bruce McLaren 10 points

another seven drivers scored points and after that another 24 drives competed in at lease one of the ten races that year.

That's 40 drivers competing in total and another 11 who attempted to qualify.

The Constructors championship was ( only the 1st placed car in each team counted)

1st Team Lotus - Lotus-Climax 54 points (Jim Clark, Mike Spence and two other drivers )

2nd Owen Racing Organisation - BRM 45 points (Graham Hill & Jackie Stewart)

3rd Brabham Racing Organisation - Brabham-Climax 27 points (Jack Brabham, Dan Gurney, Denny Hulme and 1 other driver)

4th Ferrari - Ferrari 26 points (Lorenzo Bandini, John Surtess (8 races), Pedro Rodriguez (2 races) and 3 other drivers)

5th Cooper Car Comapny - Cooper_Climax 14 points (Bruce McLaren and Jochen Rindt)

6th Honda R & D Company - Honda 11 points (Ronnie Bucknum & Richie Ginther)

7th RRC Walker Racing Team - Brabham-BRM 5 points (Jo Siffert also Jo Bonnier in a Brabham - Climax)

8th Reg Parnell Racing - Lotus--BRM 2 points Richard Attwood, Innes Ireland, Mike hailwood, Chris Amon and 2 other drivers)

with 3 other teams racing and another 3 teams that did not qualify for any races.

I remember a front runner in the Fiesta championship in the 90s who had previously been a very successful motorcycle trials rider. He said his dad advised him to take up trials first and it had helped give him a very good feeling for balance which he felt had helped driving a race car.

When I was a teenager I wanted to ride speedway and grasstrack. One of our older very experienced motorcycle club members suggested I try trials first as it would teach me good balance together with good brake and throttle control. My trials riding experience certainly helped on a road bike but unfortunately for various reasons I never got to try speedway or grasstrack.
I've just remembered that Damon Hill started on two wheels in his early days, too.

I think that Graham and Bette were trying to steer him away from following his Dad, and hoped that he would get an interest for bogwheelers instead.

Ah, but Damon raced motorcycles on the track during the 80's, he was a pretty competent rider and raced in the Yamaha Pro-Am championship series against the likes of Niall McKenzie and co.

At one time Damon raced the fearsome Yamaha TZ750. I remember Pat Mahoney saying that once it hit the power band the front wheel came up and you had to look sideways to judge braking for the next corner. Takes a lot of skill to tame one of those.
It's funny how Jean Behra seldom gets a mention when appropriate.

Meanwhile, back in the F1 world...... In an interview with the Daily Express, Arturo Mezario has quoted Lewis Hamilton as saying that he "does not want George Russell at Mercedes with him".
I'm sure he doesn't. We don't want fair competition do we. Putin/Navalny spring to mind.

Not quite. Damon took up motorbikes partially in order to avoid direct comparisons to the late/great Graham Hill. Who'd want to compete against a dad like that? :O

Betty felt that bikes were far too dangerous, there was a good chance that Damon would have competed at the Isle of Mann TT at some stage. Hence she steered her son towards his father's footsteps.

How about Max Verstappen, Nico Rosberg, Jacques Villeneuve, Nelson Piquet Jr, Michael Andretti, Marco Andretti, Alex Brundle and Christian Fittipaldi?
A bit of F1 nostalgia for fun

If that bloke on the bike doesn't watch out he'll end up draped over the Victor's bonnet!

Is that actually Raymond Mays driving the BRM in that pic?

I love the look on the kid's face on the left, I bet he remembers that occasion to this day!
Yes, Kit, it is Mays in the V16. My younger brother has had this photo hanging on his sitting room wall for years. Rather fun, eh?
Back to the grand prix drivers who started in bike racing for a moment. The sadly long forgotten Bob Anderson was another who made that switch.

David
Bob Anderson lived just outside Bedford.

Vic Elford did too for a while. He officially opened out school slotcar club.

Cheers,

John

Avoiding direct comparisons with his father's legacy was Damon's prerogative. I always found to "better than\not as good as Graham" debate a tedious bore!

As for the others? Well, everybody's different and are fully entitled to make their own decisions.

An amazing pic.

However was the bloke on the bike able to hear Mays saying a word over the noise of that V16?
