Perhaps the cut-off point should be changed to 1978. Rallying went through a lot of changes around 1979-1982 and as things stand Classic is neither arthur nor martha.

QUOTE (pasiro @ 25 Aug 2012, 15:23) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>According to Wiki it didn't come R5 Turbo didn't come out until 1980 which means it has to be 80's, doesn't it?

When it comes to something as specific as this I'd trust Gareth over wikipedia any day of the week.

But greater changes were made for Group B in 82 (I think) maybe that should be the cut off point

I think for those who attend these meetings they would mostly say that it works well as it is, if it aint broken etc

Yes, and Gareth knows his onions too.

But to my mind the R5T belongs in the brief period after the classic 2WD cars and before the 4WD Group B monsters. if it ran in 1979 it could only of been a few of times, and not in the WRC. I saw it in 1981, by which time 4WD was the thing to have.

I liked the look of the earlier Group B cars, but not the way they went. The later cars I could not warm too at all.

By contrast I loved the R5T, I just think it looks 'wrong' next to Escorts and Fiats etc.

OK, I think that is covered by having faith in Gareth. He lives and breaths this stuff.

However, what happens if you buy a legal car shape that ran after 1979? As Paul says the cars show on their packaging which rally they ran in. That is going to be the case with a lot of the R5Ts I would think. This means a 1980s cars IS running in classic, despite what you say.

I think the original SCX/Exin Renault 5 (the model of the front engined 1:1 car) would be in classic, but the later SCX, Fly and Teamslot Renault 5 Turbos (mid-engined car) are in 80's.

I think it is you guys that need to re-read things:

Typically cars in this class include (but not limited to) the following.

This list is not exclusive and if you wish to run a car not shown above just get in touch and we can advise

The R5T took part in the 1979 Rally Italy at the very least, so you are OK Lee. I suppose if you have a colour scheme from 1980 onwards they could say you should not or run it??

Hi guys.
To put some context into this debate.
Gareth makes the call as to which model goes in what class. The 'Classic' class is a 'slow' class, there for reasonable 'Scale' models of cars that rallied in the Pre 80's period. The 80's class is a much 'quicker' class look at some of the overall Rally times for the eighties models! It's Gareth's call but IMHO the Team Slot Renault 5 should be in 80's..its a dreadfull out of scale monster that should have no place in Classic.
Cheers Bill.

Sorry i didn't see this conversation taking place as i was on holiday.

You are all right - in terms of fixing specific cars to dates is almost impossible so if in doubt ask - which is what you have done.

For the purposes of SRGB 2012;
Renault Five Turbo's and Renault Five Maxi Turbo's (Like Fly, SCX, Teamslot versions) are in 80's Rally Class;

Renault Five's like this;

Are in Classic rally class, but don't forget to add a navigator!

And Spirit Renault 5's are in Pro Stock;

As an aside;
The Renault Five Alpine was announced in 1976 (sold in the UK as the R5 Gordini) - this car type had success on the Monte in 1978 - in slot terms - this is the older Exin/SCX/Altaya version.

Then in 1978 Renault displayed the R5 Turbo a year later it debuted on the Italian Giro d'Italia as a prototype. The R5 Turbo was homologated into group 4 in 1980 (Sept).

The Renault 5 Maxi Turbo was homologated into Group B later in the 80's.
