Not really a true scratch build, just a modification and hopefully an improvement to the old Airfix body shell.

I used a rotary tool to remove the molded in driver and the molded in mesh over the intakes. I plan to use a full size driver and replace the molded mesh with real mesh.

The plan is to resemble this. I'll keep you posted.

I'm going to use a Beardog F1 chassis. If you'll notice in the top picture, a notch has been cut in to fit over the rear of the chassis.

Work has progressed.

The shell was painted using Tamiya red. I used decals from Pattos and the wire mesh is a thin piece of etched brass cut to look like mesh. Once the hole was cut in the body shell, I cut a piece of the mesh and then just shaped by pushing it with the round handle of a small file.

Obviously the chassis is a Beardog F1, I'm not quite ready to make my own. All that remains is paint the driver, yes Phil Hill is coming out of retirement. The car looks so much better in person, it sits very low and looks good on the track. I'll have to work on my photo skills. All in all I thought the Airfix shell turned out decent for my first go and I hope you like it.

Next up on the bench is a reworked VIP Honda GP into my version of the Honda RA272. I've made a little progress and I'll post some photos as soon as possible.

With the fabulous come from behind Ferrari victory at Monza I was inspired to complete the Sharknose. It was tough to do but we have persuaded Phil to come out of retirement and take one last drive. Hope you like it.

Well you know you do shrink as you get older so I guess Phil is a good 2 - 3 inches shorter that he was in 1961. I'll try a maxi-models figure next time to see if I can get a little more height. Now finish sucking that lemon.

Yes, Phil is a bit low in the car, and the tires are a bit wide, and the track is a bit wide, but the car looks neat and has a good feel to it. The goggles look great, dont forget to paint the back of the helmet in black!
