I want to do some simple CHEAP reliveries of F1 Start cars.

They need to be representative of current F1 cars NOT accurate replicas! Much the same as the Start champions set represents Michael Schumacher's Mercedes and Jenson Button's McLaren.

I am thinking of using paints by Plastikote, Halfords and Humbrol.

I need to know what colours and types of paints I need for the following:

Red Bull - Blue
Mercedes & McLaren - Silver
Lotus Renault - Black
Caterham - Green
Williams -

Will leave cars red for Ferrari & possibly Marrusia

Will also leave cars white for Force India & Sauber

I would also like to know what colours Police helicopters are?

Midnight blue? what yellow?

What if any preparation do I need to do on the white plastic (no paint) F1 cars?

I know that I can obtain excellent decals from Pattos place BUT they are not cheap and are detailed to fit more accurate models.
What I really want is simple decals to put on the Start cars to make them representative of the real ones but I don't have the skills to make them.

If someone has the skills to make these simple decals I'm sure that I am not the only one who would be willing to pay (a reasonable) price for them.

All help & advice will be gratefully received

I wouldn't use Plastikote to paint cars - it's quite thick and will cover up details.
I use Halfords rattle cans, rub down the plastic body with 400 grade wet and dry so the paint will stick, spray with grey primer, flat back with 1200 grade wet and dry, spray with top coats.

Remember the 5 Ps, proper preperation prevents poor paintwork

julians right. use a cellulose primer and cellulose base coat. they will etch into the plastic body. acryllic or enamel for the detailing, as they wont affect the base coat. otherway round and you,ll end up with a stickey crazed mess john

Thanks Racingsnake!

Is there anyone who can help with colours or decals?

I would also like to know 6 or so colours to start with for painting figures in a crowd or race engineers, marshalls etc.

I'm assuming humbrol acrylic tinlets are best for this?
