FLY Cars

Ive recently got back into Slot Racing after 20 years out of the game, i remember when i was a young kid FLY cars were the " Premium Brand " both for Performance Quality & Aesthetics.. Ive noticed now, they still look the part. Attention to detail is amazing but ive seen now that the quality of components and overall performance isnt.

My question for the Experienced slot racers, are FLY Cars more for the shelf to look good on, or can tweaks be made to them to get them where they used to be?

They’re still good to race like-with-like or enjoy for their own merits.

Fly Racing versions with suspension, big motors and lightweight parts are serious bits of kit, particularly the rally cars. You can always update tyres, guides and motors and 3DP chassis exist to go the whole hog.

Better brace yourself for a photo avalanche…!

Id probally just use them for Home Racing for fun, so theyll be great for this. They look so good, and im a Rally fanatic also so got my eyes on the Rothmans BMW M3 by Slotwings which i believe are similar to FLY ?

Photo Avalanche at the ready haha

I've raced Fly cars at home and on club tracks for years, and love 'em, once the tyres are changed. Standard tyres are as useful as a one-legged man at a backside-kicking contest.

The latest Fly models are from Slotwings. As Driver #8 said they can be upgraded, depending on what you are looking for. If you are running with magnets then you may be happy as they come but without the magnet a change of tyres will make a big difference. My experience is mainly with the sports cars and you can upgrade as you need, change the rear axles, wheels, tyres and gears or go the whole way and use a 3D chassis and you will end up with a very good club racer.

PS

More rewarding to build your own cars. A good way of learning pitfalls, of which there are many, too.

Ive taken all the magnets out of my Slot cars as im wanting to learn without. Id probaly just swap the tyres unless i decide to race for clubs later down the line. Is there a particular Tyre Brand you can recomend for FLY cars for an upgrade? Many thanks :)

Wasp 'urethanes advertised on eBay. Excellent tyres that give good grip and are extremely durable.

NSR also do a tyre for Fly cars that have a 12mm wide rear tyre and room for 21mm diam. 5218 Supergrip or 5219 Ultrgrip, the Supergrip should be fine for most use.

Treaded tyres from Wasp for a wide variety of Fly cars. First class in my view.

One of my favourite Fly cars, namely, the Count Rossi, roadgoing 917. A perfect representation that also goes extremely well.

Agree Fly made some great looking cars, but as you've noticed, the running gear hasn't kept up with the likes of Slot.It or NSR.
But there are people making 3D chassis for a lot of Fly cars that really help the car perform as good as a Slot.It or NSR.
On Shapeways, there are guys like Olifer and Changing Gearz.

Which is precisely why I don't modify my Fly cars beyond changing the rear tyres.

I largely agree with this. I have a lot of Fly cars because they make/made so many beautiful models from my favourite era. Like seriously a lot. Of these I probably have three with improved rear ends (metal wheels, gears, axles, bushings etc) but I still have an embarrasingly large number of others just blueprinted with urethane tyres glued & trued on the original plastic wheels. I also normally replace the braid with soft NSR braid and add a touch of weight. On on one or two I replaced the guide with a Slot.it screw guides but mostly I just shim the guide to remove some slop.

With just these tweaks and some body float they really do run beautifully.

I love them!

The Fly/Slotwings M3 is very pretty, wildly over scale but this is a strength in open competition. With a lexan interior and a decent 3D chassis and running gear it’s a rocket.

In standard form they’re as entertaining as any other front-motor Fly. Which is either not remotely or perfectly satisfactory depending on where your slot priorities lie!

And yes - Fly/ GB Track/ Falcon/ Vulcan/ Slotwings/ Flyslot are all the same firm. I’ve found that the most recent issues of the Audi Quattro have mechanical parts significantly below the standard of the early releases.
