The car in my photograph is a F/Junior Lotus 20 but I'm not sure what the cars were that Scalextric modelled their "juniors" on as they clearly produced the F1 Porsche and BRM in the series, my guess is that the Cooper and the Lotus were also the F1 cars in which case the Lotus is the 21. I'm no expert on Scalex so I don't know why they decided to label F1 cars as FJ.

QUOTE (scudbong @ 21 Nov 2006, 16:55) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>the car looks nicer than i remember. is it a lotus 20? David you usually know these things.
Scalex seem to have called it a Formula Junior Lotus, without claiming any particular type number. So it has ought to be an 18, 20, 22 or 27. As other people have said, it clearly isn't a Lotus 18. The Lotus 27 (introduced at the beginning of 1963) is probably too late anyway, and lacks the air scoops behind the driver's shoulders. It does look like either a Lotus 20 (introduced at the beginning of 1961) or a Lotus 22 (introduced at the beginning of 1962). The 20 and the 22 look pretty similar, with the amount of modellers licence used by the mould maker it could be either. As David pointed out, the Formula 1 Lotus 21 looks pretty similar, indeed pretty much identical from the right side, although the F1 cars normally seem to have a bulge in the engine cover on the left side (which the Scalex model doesn't have) to clear the carbs.

Here's a couple of web pages with pictures of the cars.

Having followed your debate about the C67 Lotus I would say that it is definitely not a Lotus 21 as Scalextric modelled that as C63 and is quoted and pictured in the Roger Gillham book. The Lotus 18 and 18/21 were both 'boxy' at the front. The strongest evidence I've seen is for a 20. See www.race-cars.com for Lotus 20 restoration pics. Admittedly, it could possibly be a 22 but the photos I've seen of those appear to give it a more rounded rear.

I too am fascinated by the FJ range and am currently restoring/restored 1x c63, 1x c67, 2x c82, 2x c81, 2x c73, 4x c72 and 1x c66.

I've always assumed it to be a 1962 Lotus 20 Formula Junior, and a pretty good model of it too, by the standards of the day. Though it should have wobbly webs, the minilites are cute!
The 22 had a slimmer, rounder rear end, with a large scoop on the nearside for the Ford 109E Webers. Check out the Lotus Book.

Looking at the options for re motoring the lotus it sudenly occuredto me that the easy option on this would be the rear 1/2 of a carrera go chassis as this can be cut down very slim and easily converted into a motor pod to slip into the rear of the lotus this can simply be stuck in place with evostick

i'm happy to call it a lotus 20, as that seems to be the general input. lotus 20 it is then!
Graham very neat and simple. that should be plenty of power in the lightweight body. should thrash my lotus with its 2rpm power house!

mr F1mad any chance of some pics of your fj's?

chris thanks for the links, very interesting.

Howmet, I am surprised and disappointed. I would have thought that a learned gentleman, a prince of litterature and knowledge as you are, would have recognized.... Cooper wheels!
Minilite merely copied them.

In answer to scudbong, photos of FJs restored to date are available but I have no 'file attachments' option on my posting screen. Can an administrator please add this or explain how to proceed?

very nice! they all look excellent. i have noticed that just from detailing the drivers on the scx fj's can improve them enourmously. i particulary like the Graham Hill BRM, yellow porsche and the airfix sharknose ferrari's. the pictures of them in grid formation are actually quite inspiring. you have done a very nice job, well done. thanks for posting the pictures.

i got hold of 2 more working juniors and some new ortmann tyres at the orpington swapmeet. i should have 5/6 cars race ready for this saturdays (2/12/06 ) vintage club day at the southend club. i will post pictures of the entry after the weekend.

Fantastic Hans!

Gave up trying to count them. It would take forever to race/run them, never mind adding detailing. There are colours that I have not seen previously - superb. Lucky man.

Rob.

Hans, that looks like a comprehensive collection of juniors!
I know a bigtime Scalextric collector in Germany who gave up on the juniors when he had over 100 different ones, it's not only the colours but there are at least four different guide/steering assemblies.
The French cars are the nicest, made in a much more rigid and shiny plastic (maybe that's why they run better?)
I always have plenty of these in stock inc. the French versions and they all run ok, something you have to look out for as it is almost impossible to get replacement motor brushes.

Hi Guys,

If Phil says the FJ brushes are almost impossible to find then they must be rarer than hens teeth !!.

It just so happens however that I have 12 pairs new unused from a lot of parts bought on ebay some months ago.

I am sure that if anyone is short of same we could come to some arrangement !!.

In the same lot were also two new unused FJ motor axle assemblies, and it may be of interest that one of them has been badly assembled so the assembly is out of line. The motor mount pin is not parallel to the axle if you see what I mean, almost as if one pole peice is actually longer than the other !!??.

Very peculiar.

oh yes F1 mad!!!! you hit the nail on the head with that one. that looks excellent. i'm really impressed with the transformation. fairly simple but with hugely excellent results. i really think that it looks spot on. well done again.

Hans, "small collection"?. i had no idea that there were that many different FJ's. it is a very impressive collection.
