Looking good Al Ive never seen krylon paint over here . When I was building full size escort grp 4s we used a two pack cyanide based paint and had to use breathing equipment when putting it on but that stuck great to the plastic wheel arch extensions we used then ,is krylon an evolution from that sort of paint.

Don't think so Graham, Krylon has been a North American houshold type spray paint for many years, sold from most hardware stores.

Just a couple of years ago, they developed a spray specificaly aimed at outdoor plastic garden furniture called Fusion. It is a normal one part spray, and, only smells a little bit different than most enamal spray paints.

It dries very quickly, and, is almost impossible to get runs, you can really load it on. And, it really does stick to Scaley polly plastic.

Well Al, after seeing your result, which looks excellent, I really have no excuse but to give it a try. That looks to be an interesting chassis on your C67, is it detailed anywhere on the forum?

Rob.

Just stumbled upon this ancient thread. A lot of the photo links are now dead - drat! I like these little cars.

Are these particular Scalextric models (C81 and C82) lumped into the FJ category, seeing as they use the FJ motor? I posted these photos in another thread about cheap cars, but perhaps they should have been here. Just a bit of paint and some repairs to a few broken bits.

Anybody have any livery ideas for the C72 (C85) BRM?

Yes, these are vintage Scalextric. The green car is a C82 Lotus 25. The maroon car is a C81 Cooper, not sure which model. I think they were first issued around '67 or so. These cars came to me with unpainted plastic bodies. I painted them, hence their perhaps unidentifiable appearance. Also, the Cooper has some homemade bits that look different from stock.

Hi Guys
we had all this stuff over jcs helemt when scalextric realieased their lotus 49 and dave is quite right the colour was always dark blue except for one of the indy races where i suspect that jcs european helmet wasn,t tested by usac
however during the previous wrangle on colour I did run this past jimmy clarks cousin, terry who I met via e bay and he told me that on one occassion while practising for indy he did borrow dan gurneys hlemet which was black
Good job on the lotus 25 by the way, just a real shame that scalec didn,t get the nose anywhere near the correct length

Cheers tony

Thanks Tony, lucky I used dark blue for Clark's helmet! Of course, the green and yellow is probably all wrong, but the local hardware store was out of BRG...again! LOL

The Lotus 25 does have a bit of a pug nose, doesn't it?

Matt,

As you know BRG can represent about 10 (or more) different shades of green. I think your green is pretty close, but opinions on car colors can go on almost as long as about Jim Clarks' helmet.

Just don't get me started on BRM green!

Yes, the shape of the nose isn't right, but based on the measurements you sent me the overall dimensions of that Lotus 25 are much closer than I would have guessed for a car made in 1967.

Mark

Another repaint - This is a C82 Lotus from France. It has a lovely black FJ motor, very smooth and quiet, maybe the quietest motor I've heard in a slot car. The car is also quiet when running, with the tires creating most of the very small amount of noise.

Hmmm...the paint is supposed to be candy orange, but it doesn't show up very well in the pic.

Thanks Kev, I had been posting these FJs in your old "Bargain Beauties" thread, because they were bargains, but then I found this old even older thread.

I just read a new Scalextric book in which the author describes FJs as "very cheap and nasty". I had a good laugh when I read that. They may be cheap, but they're not THAT bad, are they? All of mine run very well, with no motor problems.

Lovely work on those FJs, I really like them, as someone else said earlier, if they were available I'm sure they would be a big seller, especially with a modern small motor.
Regards
Nigel

Which books that Thai? just so I can give it a miss! The main Scaley track comes out of hibernation in March, so Bargain Beauties may re-surface..

Cheers

Yeah Nigel, wouldn't that be great? And if new FJs were available, I wouldn't have any qualms whatsoever about tarting them up a bit, or even hacking bits off and making modifications. Not sure why, but I just can't get myself to hack up any of the vintage FJ bodies I have, unless they already have damage.

I'd like to see them re-issued as they were originally, with the old open-frame FJ motor, and the teeny tiny crown gear.

Kev, the book is Scalextric by Jon Mountfort, Shire Library Publications, 2009. The author is not unfriendly to Scalextric at all - he just writes with the irreverent tone of familiarity. It's not a bad little book, mostly devoted to vintage stuff.

March...the racing season is almost upon us! Dig that Scaley track out and let us see more Bargain Beauties, and all your FJs, (although I know you don't paint your cars).

Ah! I`ve got that little book Thai...it`s alright for the pictures!
Counting the days down till March, but at least my Jouef layout has kept me busy over the winter.
Cheers

The motor in this car ran hot, so the old, tired magnet was replaced with a new "neo" magnet. It doesn't run hot anymore, but it is slower now than it was with the old magnet

The two halves of the body required some sanding to improve the alignment of the outer surfaces. No other modifications, just a bit of paint and new numbers. The ancient tires still have decent grip.

Fun little cars, I gotta get a whole bunch more so I can create an entire fantasy grid from the early '60's!

Hi Thai Racer,

Nice BRM but I think it is F1 rather than FJ.

I seem to remember as a kid having the Porsche F1 also.
(The type Dan Gurney won the 1962 French Grand Prix at Rouen with.
Porsche's only Grand Prix.)
