Yes, it is all about distribution rights and exclusivity. A manufacturer probably has to prove to the rights holder (Disney/Pixar in this case) their strengths within a certain market before securing an exclusive deal. Exclusive deals are what it is all about. Scalextric are strong in the UK and English speaking countries (Australia and New Zealand). Carrera are strong on the European continent and in the US of all places. I remember in 2003 when I was over in the US you could buy Carrera in shops like Walmart, but Scalextric was nowhere to be seen.
