Can't work this one out, can the experts explain please

I read in the tuning topics about front tyres being ground off to a narrow contact area, or "O" ring front tyres, or being varnished to remove grip.
All this makes sense to me, as front tyre grip would be a detriment, especially on solid axles - the only purpose of the front wheels being to reduce body roll (?).
So, why are cars supplied with grippy rubber front tyres

Why do the manufacurers not make them from a hard non grip material
