Every now and then the subject of front wheel drive slot cars rears its head ,Basicaly the answer to the usual question is they dont work ,well thats not entirely true,The real answer is they dont work as well as rear wheel drive slot cars ,with a bit of inspiration they can be made to work to a degree.Inte emailed me to tell me that he and junior johnson were going to build fwd cars for wrexhams meet at the end of this month ,so with a little thought and a bit of aplication this is what I came up with its a front wheel drive iso fulcrum side winder . The theory is the front wheels are free to move up and down and keep contact with the track and the guide forms a tripod arangement with the rear wheels so you will always have guide contact and front wheel contact and there is no chance of the front wheels lifting the guide out of the slot ,there is also a traction mag to keep the back end in place but I will probably disguard this once Ive trued and glued some proper tyres. The rear wheels are independantly rotating, this proved faster round the bends.Early tests seem to be promising and the car is aready on the pace of an averidge nc 1 powered rally car round my test track .Once sorted I will up the power a bit but for the moment the nc1 will do.

I'm sure I mentioned this but the chassis is supposed to be plastic or wooden..

looks great however.. now.. me thinks I need summat special.. I'll just have to cannabanlalise (SP) my other chassis for the motor.. after I have tried latest mod.

now, anyone remember the Rst on sci months ago? well.. well I'll show ya later.

Oh grah this is what happened when I got moderately pished the other day...

oh it's a wee bit wide.. never mind. erm, I emailed a few others too, and rr3.9 wasnt going to however he then changed his mind as he just simply couldnt be beaten by me!

Glued n trued the tyres widend the rear track a little getting 5.5 sec laps round home track which is not bad for this set up , a standard nc1 celica is pushed to beat 6 secs, a standard magnet car such as a viper is in the 4.7 region.
I may add a bit more horsepower now and just see how well fwd will go.As it is now the setup is very easy to drive and consistant in lap times.

Inline or sidewinder? I built one a while ago just by reversing the metro chassis but I couldnt get any traction then I thought about the above idea but didnt bother to build it until you mentioned trying to get one working. Its all a case of maintaining pickup and keeping the front wheels on the deck at the same time rather like juggling soot.

Did some tests at preston last night the metro runs very well I am tempted to put a quick motor in but it may spoil the ballance .Mick Lord also had a mini which was an absolute rocket ,v12 power but I dont know if he'll keep it on at Wrexham as he had some pick up problems but when it hooked up it was very quick.
The Revell kits also went well .

looking good!

mine fwd is still being made, but i like some of your ideas so far. might even use some of them myself! So far i've got a sidewinder wooden chassis that is yet to see a track. I'm also trying to find a Scalex Mondeo shell, mine got rather damaged went it went flying... came into contact with a Vauxhal Nova, before coming to rest in the carpark after an end of season finale!

good luck and enjoy!
