Hi,

Can somone experienced please list known configurations of pinion and crown gears and their benifits?
I see mostly nylon crowns online on axles (or partly bronze). Why arent they bronze or metal, while pinions are? Or am I just not looking at right places.
Which gears brand are advised and maybe a link to some? Thanks, much apreciated.

here you see a chart with all the available ratio's.
as a rule you can say that :
- how bigger the ratio how smoother your car will be and he will react better on breaking
- how smaller the ratio how higher your topspeed will be

a ratio around 3 is a normal ratio for inliners for instance (Slot It group C standard : pinion 9, spur 28 = 3,111)

Why are the pinions bronze and the crowns nylon? Is that normal/best? One would suspect both bronze or from metal?

they do make metal spurs and crowns. usually out of bronse-alloy[betta and classics]. i dont see any reason for not using them, unless its weight or noise. john

Years ago machined brass crown gears were more common than they are today. Casting is a cheaper process than machining. I would guess that it is much easier to cast plastic than metal and most of the crown gears used today are some sort of plastic, with the better ones having machined metal hubs. Press on aftermarket pinion gears are mostly brass, Slot.it now has them made of Ergal, which is an aluminum alloy I believe. Steel pinion gears are available, those are usually soldered on. Originally Slot.it spur gears were Ergal, now there are also plastic spur gears with metal hubs. You would expect metal gears to last longer, but I have found that brass pinions wear out a lot faster than plastic crown gears. When you are talking about aftermarket gears that are held on by setscrews those should have metal hubs.
