Hi,many of us have seen the 1/48th scale James Bond slot cars made by Gilbert in the USA. But very few have seen or knew they even existed, the 1st version of these cars.
Most of us have seen the version with the Aurora pancake motor & chassis. There was an earlier very rare version that Gilbert made using their own motor & chassis design. The 1st version also had wire wheels. It was used in both the Mustang & Aston Martin. Why did they change ? Some say the cost, some say the reliability.Well heres some photos, enjoy. Bernard

Hi Bernard,

Glad you posted these!

In fact, everything I've read about the Gilbert 007 set said that they had so many returns because of motor problems that they lost a lot of money on the set! But since I had only seen the Aurora O gauge chassis, and knew how reliable they are, I always wondered about this.

But I couple years ago I saw one of these earlier versions (although I remember it differently, but that could be my memory!), and understood why they may have been a problem.

Didn't remember the wire wheels at all!

Don
