after all the years of suffering being called a miserable old bar-steward by mrs zz , I am finally rejoicing that she has come round to my way of thinking. the source of this wonderment?... a newly found joint loathing of the foul phenomenon of otherwise seemingly intelligent individuals starting a sentence with the word "so"!!!! if you have been asked , "how do you propose to re-attach that button"? , or , "what method would you use to distribute seed in your garden" , fair enough but otherwise , nooooooooooo! other current hot favourites are "yoofs" with their kecks hanging out the top of their trousers and newly qualified drivers with a green p plate (clearly designating pillock) who refuse to commit to crossing a roundabout without having received a written invitation at least a fortnight in advance! what gets your hackles up?

Good grief, not getting up until 9am

Sometimes I don't get out of bed until 10am. Sometimes even [email protected]! Then again, I sometimes get up at 6am or 6.30. Does that make me an early riser or a lazy git? I'm only 69 but, as I'm retired, the clock is less of a worrywart than it used to be.

Other people of course can do what they like, when they like. Can't say it bothers me much and I am not one to register any disapproval should such a thing arise. Proper stiff upper lip Englishman me, even if I do live in France.

I feel a fraud posting in this thread. Obviously not a proper grump.

Unless I am hungover I can't sleep past 8 or 8:30... except in the dead of winter when no sun comes out until nearly 9 or 9:30....

If the sun hits me I am up straight away....

The big problem I have is around 8 PM I get drowsy and unless I am doing something that is fun or dangerous I will conk out for 15-20 minutes... but after that I can stay up until 1 AM!

todays gripe.... the phrases "I'm on a journey" or "I'm discovering myself"....no you aren't (unless you are physically travelling) and get your empty head out of your butt you pompous pratt!!!!

Don't worry. If you get up at 10.30 it's only 9.30 in Oxford.

100% agreement here. Another one that annoys me is "I'm not in a good place" (or variations of...) Any place is as good as you make it.

My grump of the day is parking spaces. When will developers/owners realise that their car parks now have spaces that are barely big enough for "B-segment" cars?? Do some research you morons! I think you'll find that the majority of cars on our roads are still C-segment or bigger. As an example the most popular car, currently (?), is the Ford Fiesta. Does anyone actually realise that the 2017 Fiesta is virtually the same size as the original Focus of less than 20 years ago? .........And the current BMW 3-series is actually bigger than a 20 year old 5-series? It's time there was some kind of ruling on parking space sizing, rather than allowing "mark-out as many spaces as you can on that patch of tarmac, lads" Sort it out, someone! Parking spaces need to be big enough for yer average C-segment to be able to park straight and get the driver's door fully open.

you mean so you actually have half a chance of not coming back to your perfectly centrally parked car and find it strafed with even more dents down its flanks!

reminds me of the thing I saw on the telly box a while ago about a development of new houses (by new houses I mean shoddily constructed cardboard boxes) , where one of the owners could only exit their nissan micra via the sunroof after parking it in the garage!!!

We have something similar along the road from us. A block of 8 (IIRC) "town houses" with the 'garage' and front door on the ground floor, living accommodation on the 1st and sleeping on the 2nd. None of the occupiers attempts to put their car in the 'garage', they park in the courtyard. I think most use the 'garage' as their attic. Would make a good space for a medium-sized slot layout, though..........

My locality must be getting swamped with Isle of Man coinage. At a quick glance it looks no different to legal-tender UK stuff, but try putting it into a self-service checkout, a parking meter, or any other coin-op machine..........

This morning, at the petrol station and B&Q I've been handed another £3.00 of the rubbish. That's my 3rd batch (AFAIK all from different sources) since the turn of the year. I tried taking them to my Bank, but they only take notes and in any case would have wanted to charge me exchange commission. I've even tried putting them in the Bank's self-service pay-in machine, among some pukka UK coins, and it rejected them. So, I dumped them on Asda - meaning I could actually get them back again.

How stupid!

think that will be the least of our problems... I can see all sort of coin slot shenanigans during the swap over to the "new" pound coin.

no doubt our local council will use having to modify their machines as yet another excuse to raise car park charges. "out of town supermarkets are killing towns" they say....NO...greedy councils and their exorbitant parking charges are killing town centres!!!!!

Not if you live in West Oxfordshire. The District Council here does NOT CHARGE for car parking on Council run property ANYWHERE in this district, something that I am proud of as WODC District Councillor

that is indeed something to be proud of! I don't think it unreasonable that your first hour at a minimum should be free...this would encourage people to use banks/post offices etc...at least the branches that haven't been culled.

I saw a thing on the telly about a council that violates the pockets of motorists to the tune of goodness how many hundreds of thousands of pounds a year with the parking machines that don't give change.....if you made a purchase in a shop and they said "sorry , we don't give change" there would be hell up and the police called but yet again the councils do as they please...because it was put to a vote!!! (yes , I know when you park you enter into a ..one sided...agreement but that doesn't make it right.)

I'm with you on that one gordanzz I went into town for the dentist yesterday morning and got done for 60p because I did not have anything smaller than £1 coins.

my take on this is that it is illegal to knowingly overcharge in this country,

not giving change is knowingly overcharging

I dare say that as the machines normally state on them that "this machine does not give change" and you have the choice to move on and not pay that the operator would be absolved of any legal wrongdoing...morally however....you make your mind up!

personally I think all car park operators are pond life.... a local parent was giving their offspring a little driving tuition in an empty car park , they did a few circuits and left without even parking....then received a fine for having been in the car park for more than x minutes. go figure!!

I don't think they charge in Thame. The problem though is that the first hour principle is screwed because the lots are probably full of cars of people who work in the town so visitors or shoppers don't get a look in.

Going to Oxford? The "Park & Ride" is free for the first hour which is a joke but up to 11 hours is only 2 quid.

today I am mostly sick and fed up with people who are in business...but shouldn't be!

has common courtesy been removed from the modern world? I have lost count of the number of specific requests I have responded to of late and not even received a simple acknowledgment in return. the best one though had to be a potential employer with zero grasp of basic employment law , twice reducing the salary on offer after realising their statutory obligations to the employee (both times after I had accepted the position)....#*@$!!
