GOGS...Grumpy Old Gits Society..

after all the years of suffering being called a miserable old bar-steward by mrs zz , I am finally rejoicing that she has come round to my way of thinking. the source of this wonderment?... a newly found joint loathing of the foul phenomenon of otherwise seemingly intelligent individuals starting a sentence with the word "so"!!!! if you have been asked , "how do you propose to re-attach that button"? , or , "what method would you use to distribute seed in your garden" , fair enough but otherwise , nooooooooooo! other current hot favourites are "yoofs" with their kecks hanging out the top of their trousers and newly qualified drivers with a green p plate (clearly designating pillock) who refuse to commit to crossing a roundabout without having received a written invitation at least a fortnight in advance! what gets your hackles up?

People who just post page after page after page after page after page after page of ancient yellowed slot car magazine scans; a bullet is too good for the brass 'n' sponge-obsessed speed-crazed morons.

And exhale.
There are specialists for people like you....

and for people like the people you describe..

One could be extremely grumpy and indeed, complain, about a post like No 1221.

Calling anyone a moron whose opinion is different from yours is, at the very least, a very unpleasant attitude.

I would remind you that the expression Slot Racing actually includes the word Racing. This rather implies speed of some sort and therefore I assume, you think all racing drivers are morons, let alone your fellow enthusiasts on this site.

As I understand it, there is a long list as the pics are being restored after the Photo bucket debacle. So rather than rant off about it, we should be giving thanks for the amount of effort put in to restore some of the backlog of information offered by this forum.

I hope you are feeling better.

Touchy!

Quite.

The forum is a very valuable resource for all aspects of the hobby. Historic/archive articles themselves are an integral part of that valuable resource. I, for one, will probably never avail myself of the fruits of Dave's labours because I don't have the interest in the history of our hobby that many people have. He's giving-up his free time to do it - and it seems that he's spending a lot of time on it - and he should be saluted, not besmirched by those of us who don't possess that interest.

I am betwixt and between on this - I have friends (some deceased) who built very fine scale model racing cars and also participated in the more "performance oriented" part of the hobby but it was also the advent of pink and green tires and door-stop shaped bodies that drove me out of the hobby in the mid 60's.

It seems to me there can be a balance. I would never run some of the blobs I see but I am definitely part of the brass and sponge brigade. It is only because they are no longer in use that this car doesn't have them . I can't see that anyone could object to the body though (the one on the right) I make them as fast as possible whilst retaining some semblance of scale.

However, the fact that I consider most RTRs to be slow and boring doesn't mean that I should insult those that enjoy them.

Well, this is the spot for complaints so, fill yer boots, I say.

For the avoidance of doubt, as I have stated here at least once before, I use the phrase 'speed-crazed moron' lightheartedly. Ironically, if you will. If folk want to take offence, again, knock yourselves out, I'm sure you find many things in life that do offend you but no offence is intended by me.

And, speaking of irony, I originally stole the phrase from one, TSRF, who, I believe, is a fully paid up member of the brass 'n' solder 'n' nostalgia brigade, but who, I believe, was also actually being ironic when he typed it and not insulting or besmirching anyone.

I could be wrong, mind.

I can't see that anyone could object to the body though...
Hmmm. Almost as polarised as me, eh?

I quite agree. I have a number of cars similar to those pictured (although perhaps not as well done) and they are my preferred (toys?) (hobby?).

Locally we run 4 classes on a collection of home tracks, typically 4 lane wood tracks with braid or tape conductors. Two of the classes are essentially "stock" RTRs with very limited options - added weight, loosening of body screws and, in one case, tire choice. Of the remaining two, one is wide open, the other has a motor restriction but both adhere to scale appearance and dimension standards as well as prototype era (eg pre-1962 sports/racing) The latter are the focus of my efforts since, for me, building is easily 50% or more of the enjoyment. Actually, since the requirements of these "scratch" classes can be met by modified RTRs and some of the newer RTRs can be quite quick, the challenge is to see if I can "outbuild" them by a sufficient margin to compensate for my modest (and declining with age) driving skills.

We do have a "no magnet" rule across all classes although, of course, magnets would simply be ballast on the taped tracks and those not using magna-braid.

One of the observations I have made about the "other side" of the hobby - wing cars, vac-formed door stops, tiny or non-existent front tires etc. - is that competition involves a set of rules so long and detailed that it both restricts innovation and takes so long to read that I could probably build a car in less time!

As a long-time sailing dinghy racer, I must also comment that the intensity of the competition does not necessarily depend on the absolute speed of the conveyance.

How I agree with that.

I would rather have intense competition than win by a country mile any day. This year at Bordo, the very best time I had was racing with Don. We both had the same chassis and it was neck and neck all the way. Just the best fun to be had in slots. The Strombeckers are quickish but by no means very fast.

I am hoping for similar competition in December although the cars are potentially much faster.

If, as I suspect, you are referring to the current reappearance of loads of old magazine threads on the new content page then please note the following:

This is being done with the full approval of, and encouragement by, the mods.

Splendid is doing a superb job of reinstating missing scans and helping rebuild a valuable forum resource. He deserves to be thanked, not criticized, for devoting much free time to the exercise.

It will clog up the new content page for a while but is proceeding at a fast pace and only needs to be done once then things will return to normal.

Kindly desist from further snide comments.

Thanks to splendid. I'm enjoying re-reading these old threads.

Kindly desist from further snide comments.
Mine wasn't intended to be snide, merely gentle teasing.

I appreciate the time and effort being taken and the benefit and value of rebuilding historic threads. I suspect other similar comments also contained no malice, but, as usual, humour doesn't always work well on forums.

That's why the smileys are there. Tone of voice is impossible to hear so it is very easy to be mislead over intentions.
One man's gentle tease is another's snide comment. Such is life. Such is as I have found. 🙄

No malice, no snide-idity; valuable archive or old yellow pages the preservation is undeniably knackering the 'New content' function at times. Just sayin'.
We live in the era of the permanently offended, Mr Ickx. Some people's knee-jerk reaction to anything is to assume the worst, to turn life grey like our wretched English skies. C'est la vie.

I'm off to play with the grandchildren's colouring pens. Especially the gaudy lurid ones.

Nonsense. The new content feed works absolutely fine. Scroll down, click on the next page. It's really not difficult.

More importantly, we should welcome and encourage people to post, not ctriticise them . Splendid has put in a great effort in restoring valuable content.
