after all the years of suffering being called a miserable old bar-steward by mrs zz , I am finally rejoicing that she has come round to my way of thinking. the source of this wonderment?... a newly found joint loathing of the foul phenomenon of otherwise seemingly intelligent individuals starting a sentence with the word "so"!!!! if you have been asked , "how do you propose to re-attach that button"? , or , "what method would you use to distribute seed in your garden" , fair enough but otherwise , nooooooooooo! other current hot favourites are "yoofs" with their kecks hanging out the top of their trousers and newly qualified drivers with a green p plate (clearly designating pillock) who refuse to commit to crossing a roundabout without having received a written invitation at least a fortnight in advance! what gets your hackles up?

I don't have to manage an all female environment where (in my lifetimes working experience) this type of thing is the norm.
My first job, after leaving college, was in a certain High Street stationery/book shop. 30-odd staff & probably 25 of them of the female variety. I stuck it for nearly 3 years, but when I left I swore that I would never work in a female-majority environment again. I value my sanity too much.
Before I saw the light, I used to work for a well know Building Society. I ran mortgage centres which is a laugh considering I can't count beyond ten and couldn't organise a pissup up in a brewery.

However, I was usually the only male amongst upwards of fifty women and girls. I rather enjoyed certain aspects of it but I was screened from most daily activity by having my own office. I mostly left them to it as they were much more competent than me and let them deliver coffee at regular intervals along with the cakes I bought as bribes.

I am still marginally sane.

Just been out to peg clothes on the washing line in a freezing 50mph wind, with the result that several pairs of Y-fronts and shirts are now en route to Norway. Great...

Another couple of things I've noticed now that I'm spending more time driving on local roads..........

As soon as a bus pulls-up at a stop, the driver starts the indicator to pull-out. Following traffic can't see what's going-on at the front of the bus and has no idea if/when it's safe to pass.

Drivers moving into lane 2 on a dual carriageway because they are turning to the right a mile further up the road. Even when there is minimal traffic and they will have no problem getting into the correct lane a couple of hundred metres before the turn.

Invariably they are doing at least 15mph below the prevailing speed limit, and as everyone in the UK should know we are not supposed to overtake on the left (aka "undertake"). "But it's OK if the car on the right is making a right turn" I hear you say. Quite correct. But how do you actually know when the car on the right isn't indicating, and there isn't a turn-off until the one he/she is going to take? Assumption isn't a defence in UK law.

You are allowed to cross double white lines - and by inference overtake on the left - to pass "an obstruction".

My morning routine over breakfast is to trawl the news and slot forums.

There is one thing that absolutely drives me insane!! (not far to go perhaps?). The BBC is the worst offender. This morning there was a potentially interesting article about 60's pop art and how it defined an era. About graphics clearly and one would expect something visually arresting.

Hah! Not a single illustration, no examples, nothing. How the hell can anyone be so boring as to just witter on about something like that without showing examples?

My prejudices might be showing as I am pretty much a visual person, having been educated in the arts but seriously, how on earth could anyone intellectualise a visual subject to such a degree? It's pictures init? Show us some!

I know that you live in some strange foreign land and I don't know what type of TV or streaming you have but the BBC did a brilliant documentary on Pop Art recently and it's well worth watching if you can get it. I can't remember the title or exactly when it was on but it was in the last six to twelve months and it was shown on BBC4.

PS I've just found it, "Soup cans and superstars" but it's not currently available on iPlayer - it's sure to be repeated.

Couldn't agree more but... can't imagine there are too many left at the Beeb old enough to know what pop art is.

Plenty of room for despair on this subject. Don't get me started, please.
Thanks David.

We have UK TV via a streaming site but none of the catch up progs seem to work, even with a VPN. However, I'll have a look as 99% of the available stations seem to run constant repeats, some of them the same stuff every day! How they make money I'm not sure.

I did just notice a link in the article but that doesn't excuse it. Maybe I would be accused of just wanting to read comics but illustration is a large factor in good typography. It's all about communication after all.
Predictive text is making me grumpy. You want to write a Forum post and never complains 28th Smith said something worthwhile companion piece that innumerable impressionist painters captured in shiny silver medallist...

See what I mean?
That's one thing I never complain about, every school report said "must improve spelling", along with spell checkers.

That reminds me of the day when a pool typist (female) at my workplace returned a letter with "floppy disk" spell-check altered to "floppy dick". The ribbing lasted for months.
