Seems that BMW is due to announce the termination of the WRC programme today... after Prodrive rubbished such claims yesterday.

Shame.

Hopefully Kris Meeke will get a competitive run somewhere ASAP, time's no longer on his side and he's more than proved that he can get the job done both with the MINI last year and the IRC with Peugeot.

Such a pity that, and I cant really understand BMW's decision. The project has been a complete success, with three podiums last year, and Sordo matching Loeb's times on various stages at the Monte last week, with it came a fine second place ahead of the charging Solberg.

It seems as though BMW's whole attention is focused on their new DTM project. However, Prodrive run the Mini's in the WRC, and BMW have very little to do with preparation and running of the cars, except to pay the bills. And it's good publicity.

Wierd thing this motorsport!

A week ago this cropped up on another forum -

Latest info I have on MINI is that it is Sven Quandt that is putting the blocker on the MINI WRC deal. For those of you that don't know, Sven is the grandson of the family that owns BMW and is on the board. He sees the WRC effort from Prodrive as a threat to his X raid project which would directly compete for funds.

So there are a few people with the knives out.

Edit -
And now this!!!!!!! @ 03.02.2012 17:28

World Rally Event Organisers have tonight been told they will have to negotiate their own television broadcasting of their events after the failure to reach agreement with Eurosport.

"Despite very lengthy negotiations with Eurosport, we sincerely regret to have to inform you that, unfortunately, it has not been possible to conclude an agreement even when trying to give them the possibility to act as a provider of services, providing television coverage of the WRC."

"Therefore the FIA will not be able to put in place a global promoter, or even global television coverage at this time. As a result, each WRC organizer will unfortunately have to negotiate the television broadcasting of his event."

The FIA says it will provide the Timing/Tracking service with the usual sporting and technical services "to ensure that the Championship takes place in the best sporting conditions", and add that it will maintain the link between the organisers and partners of the WRC, setting in place a plan of action to determine the best way of ensuring the promotion of the Championship as soon as this can be secured."

Cheers - Phil

[Grumble] Why the hell do they seem to be trying so hard to kill off rally sport on the upper levels? It has a closer relationship to every day driving than that F1 guff that sucks so much cash.

Almost impossible to find TV coverage without pay TV. [/Grumble]

Hmmm... so BMW has pulled Prodrive's 'works' status and made the second string Motorsport Italia team its leading entry because it's got pay drivers and therefore doesn't require any budget spend.

BUT Prodrive has intellectual rights over the oily bits inside the car, so BMW can't make a clean break and the British squad is to be retained as 'development team'.

In other words: it's a mess.

BMW must be 'thrilled' with the result. It's now got a works team that is going to get beaten by the customer Prodrive cars for as long as Prodrive's funding continues to hold out. And BMW will still provide Prodrive with some funding because they need to develop the upgrades for BMW's works cars over at Motorsport Italia.

Brilliant. It would take Sir Humphrey Appleby to sort that particular rat's nest out!

"In view of the somewhat nebulous and inexplicit nature of your remit, and the arguably marginal and peripheral nature of your influence within the central deliberations and decisions within the political process, there could be a case for restructuring their action priorities in such a way as to eliminate your liquidation from their immediate agenda."

One has to laugh

Prodrive and Sordo just won the IRC Toure De Corse rally with a Mini S2000. Good riddance to small minded BMW.

One or more of the slot manufacturers really needs to start producing some IRC cars. We (OK, that means "I") need more variety of modern rally cars. Scalextric or Carrera Mini, Scalextric or SCX Fiesta, SCX DS3 just isn't enough choice.

OR Avant Slot 207. Apparently there is a 1:1 208 in the works according to the EuroSport commentary.

The Avant 207 is great and, yes, the development of the 1:1 208 is well underway.

That leaves us with the MG ZR S2000, Proton Satria Neo S2000 and VW Polo S2000 still to get as the nicest cars not yet turned into slots. The Proton makes rather a nice 1:1 rally machine...

ZITATAnd of course there's always the new Fabia S2000 appearing at Gaydon!

Did I miss something? Is somebody really going to make a Fabia S 2000? In this decade?

Yep - Me!

It's not 100% ready yet - the windows need finishing and the rear end plates (photo etch) on the rear wing need to arrive.

The first livery decals are all artworked - S. Oiger - Monte 2012, The Skoda UK Livery from Rally Azors, is taking a while for me to finish, mainly the swooping arrow head on the side (which needs a complex paint mask).
