Hi Everyone,
I've just made the move back into slot-racing after a lapse of over 30 years - I ran my first slot car back in 1963 and stopped in 1970. My first car was a Cooper Climax VIP Special which served as a very reliable and fast (by the then standards) introduction into slots for me. Also scratch-built my own cars using a variety of materials, like brass tubing, brass plates and whatever suitable materials I could get my hands on. In motors at that time were the Ks Mk.I, MRRC 3 and 5 poles, Pittman's DC196. Bodyshells came from Supershells, MRRC and Airfix - can still remember the Supershells shark-nose Ferrari F1 and their BRM F1 and Lotus 25, also the Airfix Porsche and Lotus 24 F1s. I then progressed to the then new Revell Ford Cobra 427 with the stamped adjustable aluminium chassis powered by the Mabuchi FT16. Had loads of fun in those clubby days when everyone was just racing for pure enjoyment of the hobby. Then with the advent of 1/24 scale and the commercial race tracks, the cost of equipment sort of went off the scale and it was no surprise that the end eventually came with the closure of the last tracks in the country in 1970. Subsequently there have been some half-hearted attempts at reviving slots with badly managed and promoted pay tracks by operators who didn't really have a clue as to what slot-racing was about. All these ended in failure and everything has been very quiet on the slot scene here for a number of years.

It was only just a couple of months ago that I stumbled onto a hobby shop in a shopping mall which was selling and promoting Scalextric sets and cars and which had a decent 60-foot track set up inside the shop for customers to try their cars and also to hold races. A look around the place revealed quite a well-stocked premises with just about all the latest Scalextric cars on the shelves and a manager who was quite clued in to the requirements of his customers. I went home and after humming and hoing for 2 - 3 weeks, finally decided to take the plunge back into the hobby (I never really left it as I went into RC cars in 1972 and am still in it, now with 1/5 cars). So last week, it was back to the shop and got myself the Scalextric Le Mans set (track #4) with the 2 MG Lola cars. The track is now set up (sort of semi-permanently - my wife hasn't threatened to divorce me yet!) in my living room and has since been enlarged and extended to a 60-foot high-speed 2 laner. My collection of cars has rapidly increased from the 2 base cars in the set to a total of 26 cars over the past week! Haven't got the courage to tell the missus yet -
! Will be entering my first competition in a long while this Sunday (June 13) and will be keeping my fingers crossed I don't mess up at the track.

Hi fellas, many thanks for the encouraging words.
Must say it's good to be back after such a long lay-off
. Have almost forgotten how fast the cars can go or is it that I've gotten older and slower? Got thoroughly clobbered in a mock race with a 9-year old kid today whilst practising for this weekend's race. Oh well, at least I know what to expect on Sunday.

Eh, Gunther, I do have some pics of my track and cars but don't know how to post them on this forum - any tips? I'll probably show the lady one new car a week and slowly break her in! Hope I'll survive to week 24!

Alan, I'm living in KL too, so if you happen to be down this way again, give me a call - my mobile number is 012-2972073. I live in Bangsar Baru.

Stay in the slot, everyone ...............

Hi,
I have very fond memories of KL - lived off Jalan Ampang for two years
Last time I was there I saw some Carrera and Scalextric cars at Mid Valley and One Utama - but prices were exorbitant compared to the latest RC offerings from China, without the usual "western" mark-ups

My bet is that slot racing will pick up big as soon as Scalextric Digital is introduced

Ciao

I'll post more pictures after the race on Sunday.

Hi Beppe, always glad to hear from people who have been to KL. Yes, I agree with you - the slot cars sold here cost an arm and a leg
but unfortunately, we don't have much of a choice at the present moment as there's hardly any shops selling them. I know we could get them by mail order through the Net but then there's the question of support later. So I would rather pay a bit more and support the local shop which would in turn support me with the spares I need rather than to get the stuff cheaper from overseas and wait an eternity when you need spares like yesterday! I know of the shops you are talking about as Hobby Bounties in 1 Utama is the shop I'm patronising. They've closed their branch in Mid Valley.
Any chance of you coming back here?

I'd be greatly tempted, and the local affiliate company (in Tun Razak) favors short term consultancy jobs
But - odd as it may sound - I took early retirement to devote myself to the development of my digital fixation - look it up in that section of the forum . So I'm going to stay put for as long as it takes - after that ... who knows ? And Malaysia IS a place where it would be well received !!

Hi Noobs, do you realise this thread is about 4 years old?!!! The last post was from Beppe in June 2004.

I don't think you really need to come to K.L. to get your slot car stuff as you've got shops in Singapore selling the same stuff (and probably cheaper!). However, if you still want to look at the KL shops,
Hobby Bounties are at the Bangsar Shopping Centre (BSC), Bangsar Baru, 59100 K.L.;
Nikko (for Carrera cars) at 3rd floor Megamall, Mid-Valley City, K.L. and
NTC Hobbies at this address: NTC Hobbies (M) Sdn Bhd , 11A, Jalan PJU 1A/20A, Ara Walk, Ara Damansara, 47301 Petaling Jaya, Selangor D.E., Malaysia.
NTC are the only one of the 3 shops with a website and they are the importers of SCX.
