Has anyone cut down standard HO track to just one lane?

I'm looking into building a small rally-style track and am interested in just one lane for the whole layout (time trial racing).

I'm not really able to cut my own routed track so I was wondering about just cutting down my regular 2-lane track.

Any ideas/opinions?

Welcome to SF mate.

Tyco made some single lane HO track, possibly Life-Like Aurora too, but it would be hard to do yourself.

Where are you from? Adding that to your profile may well help you or somebody else at some point.

Depends on the connecting tabs - whether they need to work across the entire width or still hold when cut down the middle. I don't think the Micro Scalextric ones will work, but Tomy AFX should. Tyco too, maybe.

The cutting will need patience, skill and good tools. There are certainly no electrical issues to be worried about.

I suspect each piece will need a good bit of glue to hold the ends together and the edges that have been cut will need to be supported by something 4mm (-ish) thick. Or worked into some landscaping with cork borders, for example.

Another option - without the need for cutting - is to do two lanes but put one cross-over in the track. You then run a lap on each lane - a bit like the Race of Champions tracks. Tyco did some interesting off-road track pieces.

Could potentially be a very interesting project. Keep us posted

There is quite a bit of Tyco single lane stuff on evilbay at the moment, and I think I have some somewhere. It's yours if you can cover postage.

Combining a quantity of that with a crossover and two lane track in the way Woodcote describes could give you just what you are looking for without cutting.

Any thoughts of what you will use for timing?

Rally loops like the SCX ones are relatively easy to make from any brand of track, if thats what you're trying to do.

Faller did a huge amount of single track , including hairpins and points sections..have a look at my italian job thread as I'm going to be using quite a bit of it...you can come by it reasonably cheaply on german ebay if you don't go for the boxed stuff and wait for the right lot..I have a huge amount at the moment and won't need it all but you will have to wait a few years until I've finished the rest of the circuit before any of it becomes spare
