Hello my Euro Freinds, I have some questions about an alleged American car that ironically some of you across the pond may be better qualified to answer.

The Howmet Turbine TX Mark II Can-Am/Spider. I have seen pictures of the model kit and atleast on pic of the real car, but did it ever compete in Can-Am or anywhere else for that matter? And Finally would anyone consider casting it in 1/32 scale ?

John Dilworth (howmet tx) did a very nice casting of the coupe in 1/32, I did a short run of these in the Exkaz range a couple of years ago,

I believe the masters are now in the hands of Steve Francis/Dave Capelan but not sure if they have marketed this one or not.

Hi Chet,

The Howmet TX Mk II with open bodywork (rebuilt chassis #2, which had been rolled at Le Mans) never raced. In August 1970 it was used it to set six new FIA speed records for turbine cars, but it never competed in a race.

I think I remember reading somewhere that the open car had been restored to "original" spec.

While there were only 2 original cars I believe that there are now 3 restored cars! One of which is a " new build" and one converted from the original open top car and raced along with the original closed car.

The McKees are some of my favorite cars. The Turbine Car is my favorite of those. Here is a conversion of the MPC kit that I did several years ago to compete in a Vintage Race Night series:

MPC brought out a 1/25th scale model of the open car a number of years ago and re-released it in 1976, with different box art.

The 1968 Howmex TX had a turbine engine used in helicopters made by a firm called Continental I believe only one of the three cars mentioned has it (unless the new build has managed to get hold of one). When one of the cars was at the Goodwood Festival of Speed it was running a Ailson (?) engine and had to be jacked up and held on the brake to start up. It did not have the proper waste gate system.
