I just wondered if there is anybody famous out there who is willing to admit that they are on this forum. A racing driver, a rally driver, a celebrity of some sort, even a politician.

Come on, time to come out!

I was on TV when I was about 13. We had sailed from Portsmouth to Cherbourg and right into a French industrial dispute. What was supposed to be a late evening crossing of the channel turned into a three day (nonpleasure) cruise as we tried one French port after another without any luck of docking and disembarking. All were blockaded by fishermen, and some passengers onboard tipped our garbage into their boats...
Finally, after abandoning any hope of landing in France, and 3 days stuck onboard, we returned to Portsmouth whereupon we were besieged by the press and TV.

To save the holiday we drove from Portsmouth to Dover, crossed the Channel to Zeebrugge and then drove back to our villa near Cherbourg. All in all we lost about 5 days out of a 2 week holiday.

Other than that I was a non paid extra in a Harrison Ford movie, I forget the name, but it is set in Washington DC (not to be mistaken with Washington, CD. County Durham). I have such a bit part, I find it hard identifying myself.

Do I have a claim to fame?

Of course I am also the real Mr Bond, and no relation to that fictional chappy James. However, I am definitely not Sparticus.

PS, My Great Uncle was Frank Barson... The Vinnie Jones of his day, and played for Aston Villa, Manchester United and once for England.

Now you're scraping the barrel Graham.
My sister was once kissed by wrestler Big Daddy...!! Beat that.

I made the front cover of the Isle of Man Echo (daily paper) and the front cover of the Morgan Sports Car Club magazine some years ago.

This is fun but I think it's fairly safe to say that nobody on here is famous OR they're too famous to tell us about it.

Say no more...

What's amazing is how many people on here seem to have had their "15 minutes of fame" at some level... I was also chosen on a radio show when I was about 12, did an American general's voiceover on a French TV movie, etc.

I know of at least one guy on here who's known worldwide in his field, but who probably doesn't want to broadcast the fact, and I imagine it would be similar for anybody who's really well known.

Already, just looking on SlotBlog and seeing names like Mike Steube, Keith Tanaka, Bryan Warmack, Tony P, Mike Morrissey and other "mythic" slotters was already pretty amazing for a kid who was 15 in 1967...

I first became famous when I won second prize in a needlecraft competition at my primary school.

My children think I'm famous because I've been pictured in several cycle racing and triathlon magazines.

My ex-wife tried to convince a judge that I'm a lot more famous than I am because she (mistakenly) believed that winning a few bike races and triathlons meant I was rich.

I achieved notoriety and appeared in a number of national magazines when I broke my back.

I'd rather have remained anonymous.

Yes, I'm famous for being a grump.

Fire away guys! we're good to go. At great expense I have hired a vast team of lawyers who after a long period of honest (yeah, yeah I know... lawyers) consideration have assiduously determined "...most of the posts ARE relevant to Motorsports and motoring and that WE ARE the slot racing community..." which is allowed under Article 27 subsection 153 of the Spurious Internet Divergence Code...

Scott you have to try harder to be a grump... Your post doesn't meet the standards of "curmudgeon 3rd class"

As this seems to have evolved into a thread about famous people you have known I may as well list mine!

I grew up in Caterham with the actor Bill Nighy and still know him and through him have known Julie Waters, Pete Poselthwaite, Michael Kitchen, Bob Hoskins, Ken Cambell, Mike McCartney (Paul's brother) and quite a few more.
I went out with the singer Kirsty McColl when she was sixteen for a few months.
I played in a band called the 'Diamond Chestnuts' and we played at the Marquee club, the bass player and guitarist went on to play in John Ottway's band.

people often ask me at swapmeets if I am 'The Phil Smith' so I guess I must be quite famous in my own right in the small world of Slots!!

Hehe Andi...

Maybe all those really famous people are choosing not to reply and protecting their anonymity
. Like Graham hinted at in the first post. It would have been interesting if someone really famous came forward. However, the numerous replies and popularity of this thread just goes to show what a good sense of humour the slot car community has.

Not me, exactly, but I did help some guys from Coventry get on TV although not for reasons they would have wanted! Whilst on patrol in Northern Ireland some years ago a car stopped and asked for directions - the afore mentioned group on a fishing holiday. I did so and continued the patrol without thinking any further about this until back in the mess that night, watching the news on TV, I saw the same car with a large boulder on the bonnet after the IRA had blown up the bridge I'd directed them to!

If you guys are slotters reading this then I'm very sorry!

No injuries to anyone, by the way, but I'm sure the car was never the same.

If you watch the Police Stop Vice special from Leicester, You can see me driving a breakdown truck in almost every shot!
The Garage was just down the rd ( I had a busy night too,)
Also there's an episode of Last of the summer wine that you can see me(& the same breakdown) truckover the stream from Cleggy's house.
I also got into the local paper whilst a teen as an un-named hero(with a mate) for saving a young mums life after she crashed into a stationary JCB.
