Hello, way back in September I reported on here that I had bought a Jouef set which was the first piece of Jouef that I had bought in over 35 years. Well I finally got into the loft and dragged my old set and extras down with the threat to my son that we could spend boxing day playing with my old cars and track. I have found a Porsche 917, Ford GT,Chaparal,Capri,Matra 650 and the remains of a Ferrari,BRM and a two tone Lotus. The problem is that most of it needs work on which I have started but I am in desperate need of 2 good working motors so I can at least have 2 cars working to have a race with my son, plus new pickups and tyres. I have sent an email to an address in France hoping for a reply but would be really grateful if anyone had any UK contacts or leads where I can get motors at least.

Some of the stuff in the loft was packed into a Jouef cardboard box with 503310 and Jouef label on it and 2F.00 and the track had 2f stickers on them, I cant remember how much that was in old money but remember that all my holiday pocket money went on track and cars except the one year when I dropped the Velo Solex and broke the release arm and my dad made me pay for that instead.

Anyway thanks in advance if anyone can help me rescue this for Christmas.

cheers

Hi Colin,
Good Jouef motors & spares in general are thin on the ground in the UK. If you buy any Jouef always make sure that the model is intact & the motor runs strong.

Are the motors you need to replace still turning, but slowly? If they are the motor might just need re-magnatising,it is a weak spot on all Jouef motors. Google The Engine Works in Canterbury. It`s a train shop which wich will re-mag your motors.

Visit my friend Brunos internet shop in France. He sells replacement neodidium motor magnets, pick up braid & all the tyres you need for your Jouef cars. He is also on ebay UK as dauremy, just type Jouef in the Scalextric section.
Also, look for the link to his Jouef forum. Join up & ask any questions on there-Google translate is great!
The other good Jouef forum in France is www.gentlemendrivers.xooit.fr

Sometimes you might see spares on Ebay France. A few sellers are willing to post to the UK. Just ask them.

Early Jouef cars had spring loaded pick up shoes. These were meant to be thrown away & replaced with a new shoe as soon as the braid wore out. It`s really difficult to source new pick up shoes now , so you have to put a new piece of braid in yourself. Simply push the new braid through the slot in the shoe, splay at the top & wrap round the shoe. The braid should be no longer than the shoe. Buy your braid from Bruno.

Later cars had a couple of small screws in he chassis. Simply loosen, pull the old braid out , replace & tighten. Put a drop of oil on the screw thread as they can become overly tight on the chassis over time.

Be aware that getting a Jouef car to run properly on a new set of braids can be at bit troublesome. It`s just a case of trial & error.

It would be good if you could post pics of your cars on this thread or PM them to me so I could try & help you more.

B.T.W NEVER GET OIL ON THE PINION OR CONTRATE GEAR & BACK AXLES.

Cheers

Magnets on Jouef motors may be the problem, or not. Try this : take a small screwdriver and place it on either side of the motor cage, near the magnet. If the magnet is ok you should be able to lift up the whole motor and even the rear axle as well (with very good magnet)

If the magnet is not the problem, maybe the rotor is faulty (burnt or cut copper wires), in that case the motor can be said "dead"...

More often, the motor simply needs a good cleanup; the easy way, one that works most of the time indeed, is to run (with a 9v battery for example) the motor within a glass (try to close it) of F grade petrol (sorry I don't know the exact terms in english). This will remove most dust / dirt / greases ... If it is not sufficient, a full disasembly / cleanup is needed. In any case, after the cleanup, put a small drop of lubricant on both side of the motor axle (from the exterior, never in the motor)

For spares, Kev is right, contact Bruno. Or for the braid, the NSR ultra soft is the best you could find and use (for Jouef or any other car by the way)

@Kev

Why wouldn't you lubricate the rear axle / gear ??? I do, and never saw the slightest problem with this, it makes a better / smoother car. I do this also on the front axles / stubs

Hi Bertrand,
I hope you are well.
Oil on the pinions of early cars does tend to split the pinion, & as we know these are becoming rare now.
Also, in the UK service sheets Champion (1963-1868) strongly advises not to oil the motors.

That`s a great tip of yours to clean the motors!

Hi , this is my collection of cars such as they are, i've also got 60straights,30corners,2 bridges,2 lap counters (each type)and several chicanes so hopefully I will be able to create a decent track. The above picture doesnt include a couple of canabalised F1 cars although I did include the more complete Lotus.
I havent tried the cars/ motors on the track yet as i'm not even sure if the transformer is good at the moment but they all feel stiff but i will strip them down and clean them and check magnetism etc. I'm getting quite excited by the prospect of getting all this up and running again.

cheers

Hi Colin,
You should be able to get most of them going.
Those cars of yours are from the early/mid 70s & had the upgraded motor in, they didn`t suffer as much with magnetic loss as the 1960s models.
Change all the braids & tyres as a matter of course. & Bruno will have all the tyres you need.

Jouef track wasn`t really designed for rug racing so you`re best laying it on a board. You should look for track connecting clips as well. Don`t use them until you are sure of your circuit as they are metal & snap quite easily.

Give me a PM if you`re stuck.

Cheers

Thanks for the hints. Of course not, I would not like to split the pinions. However I think I've read somewhere that oils of older time were more corrosive than todays; I'm using synthetic ones, thoses provided by slot car manufacturers (Scx for instance), and I've not come with unexpected results so far (hope I'm not wrong !!!)

Just in case, for the pinions, check ebay France, a seller has compatible ones; some guys on our forums have bought some and said they are a perfect fit (but too early yet to say if they will last for long)

PS: I'm in the middle stage of completing a permanent Jouef layout. You won't be alone now here

Great news that you are building a Jouef layout Bertrand!
I look forward to seeing your pictures.
I`ve seen those pinions on Ebay France. I think they fit the later Jouef cars which had a thicker motor pole. I was lucky enough to buy a full bag of unused pinions a couple of years ago...I treat them like gold dust!

Here`s a rare version of the Porsche 904GT. It`s a "decor competition" model. The chequered strips set it off nicely.

& out of interest here`s a rare UK advert taken out of a comic.
Looks to be 1965/66.

A nice "Decor Competition" Ferrari 250 GTO.
Cheers,

I use Corgi Silverstone figures on my Jouef layout. Here`s an unopened box of six spectators I`ve just received-they`ll stay in the box!
