Hi guys,

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this, apologies if I got it wrong.

I was wondering about..
How many cars (new or used) do you buy each month/week?

How many of these is your wife/partner aware of
?

and last one

How much money average do you spend in a car?

Few, very few. I may buy nothing for months on end and then all of a sudden it's a binge. If there's a binge it's usually because I'm buying for an event or a project or they're just plain cheap.

His Lordship knows about all of them. Heck, half of them are for him.

Average per car is probably around AUD 50. A little less than the average online price of a Scalextric car here.

Hi Sez,

I buy about couple of cars a month. It tends to go in "fits and starts" (in January I bought 5, February 2, March might not be any) but the yearly average is about 18 cars.

My wife is aware that I have too many cars
but she has no strong interest and does not keep track of the deliveries. Some cars are delivered to my place of work as it is a pain to go and collect them from the nearest depot at the weekend. So she is not aware of all arrivals!

I do not have a budget or limit. If I want a car I will save my pennies and buy it. Average I would say is about £45. Last year the cheapest was £5.00 the most expensive £111.00.

I hope that Wraith responds to this thread.....

Cheers,
Philip

Well I've just started in the slot car world.

Ive just bought 12 NSR cars, 2 flys and the good lady is not over impressed!

But then again I don't waste money on other stuff and she buys clothes, clothes, clothes and more clothes?

So in my world I am able to spend £100 a month?......

I find very interesting to see the approach to this question from each of you, from the discrete ones (too many, too much or classified information) to the ones that feel more comfortable sharing this information...

I'm a slot car newbie, and as you can see a "tea boy" in the Forum, I recently started buying some cars, at this point I'm not sure whether my type of car interest will change or not.
I try to buy cars that I find attractive Porsche 935, Lancia Beta, Porsche 917, Ferrari 512, Ferrari 365, Mclaren F1 GTR, BMW 3.5, Ford Capri RS, Lola T70, BMW M1 and more

I can't see myself as a proper slot car racer, but I might surprise my self after a visit to a local slot car club, who knows..

I try to spend no more than £35, but some times I fail
Last month I bought 3 (2 Spirit Porsche 936, 1 Fly Lister Storm)

I started out buying fairly randomly, just picking up stuff I liked, and rapidly got to 100 cars. Then I ended up being out of work for 6 months, which in some ways turned out to be a good thing. I got rid of the poor-running stuff (non-mag on a wood track) and now only buy around 4 cars per year. Most of my Fly cars and alot of my Scaleys disappeared during the purge, and now I tend to buy only NSR and Slot It. I like to buy cars that are a bit unusual, or I get resin kits and build them up myself. I also usually buy in pairs, to ensure my cars have suitable running mates. My wish list from here is a pair from Mr. Slotcar and I'd really like to get another pair from MTR32.

I have way too many interests so I can't really put a bunch of money into just Slotting. I recently bought my first DSLR (Nikon D7000), have a motorcycle to keep running, and a small music studio in my office with a 24 channel board and a bunch of keyboards. Most of the stuff is old, the mixer needs replacing as soon as I can, and all of that requires money.

I still have around 100 cars, but generally buy and sell to keep the number around 100. My wife is aware of everything I buy, they're sitting in cabinets for all to see anytime they want to.

I have been into slots for about 6 months now and have way too many cars. About 60 or so - it's hard to tell because many of them are in bits. Quite a few are old Scalextric that I am restoring (slowly). I have a few Slot. It, MrSlotcar and Avant.

But I have now decided I'm no collector - shelf queens are not my thing and I find myself opening boxes and giving the cars a run. So I'm probably going to get rid of 20 or 30 of the brand new unopened ones and concentrate on cars that I will actually drive.

I am thinking I may limit myself to 100 cars. When I reach that number I will force myself to sell one before I buy one. Hopefully that way the quality of my collection will rise as I thin out the rubbish and add better ones.

My wife knows I buy cars but she doesn't care - and never looks in my cupboard - it's probably because she doesn't want me to look in her wardrobe!!!

I reckon this year I will buy 10 cars only; seeing as I have so many to be working on including vintage and new Slot.It white kits.

Average spend is probably only about £15 - I got the vintage stuff at swapmeets for about £3-£5 per car and the Slot. Its for around £30. Lurking on Ebay on a weekday afternoon yields some major bargains!

I spend about $1500-2000us annually.
I may buy a $29us car on sale or
I may buy two NSR's in a month's time.
who knows?..........well yes the wife knows....

What you guys should and probably already do is make one
hobby pay for another. I sometimes sell one of my Smoking Pipes
and buy a few slots or vice-versa.....kinda like rotating inventory....

Buy as I need - recently joined a club so have had to build up stock in each class.

Also buy anything I fancy - all get run, no shelf queens. I think that's a total waste of a car and I get the hump with people outbidding me on ebay so it can sit in a cupboard! If it's going to sit in a cupboard for ever, buy a static model.

The Mrs is pretty clued up, so I make a point of mentioning things like "That NSR cost less than that lipstick and face gunge you bought last week". Usually get a hearty thump for being cheeky.

Go to your local slot club, you wont be sorry. It's a bit of an eye opener. Luckily, my club has a great 4 laner and about 10 really good rally stages. I'm hooked.

I would imagine I've got 30 or 40 cars, but will see the purchasing rate slow as I get too many to drive regularly.

Hi, I buy between 2 and 8 cars a month. It depends on what the car is and if I like it. I do like the older model SCX rally cars like the Mk II Escort. My wife knows about every car and often helps me to pick which ones I buy. She has great taste in cars, such as the silver GT40. I collect them rather then race though every 1 of my cars are run on a regular basis. I pay on average about £35 per car.

I have recently had my first NSR car and will soon be receiving a Scaleauto Mercedes! :)

It started with the two cars from the first set, then four as the second set came in about three weeks later and then, very rapidly I counted 27 cars and I hit the breaks ...
Lady of the house believes we have at least six or seven cars ....
But then, she never comes up the attick as we (my daughters and I) race.
37 to 59 £ per car, exception GB and Fr A1 cars, could not leave them as the local dealer sold them at 20 £ for the pair.

Don't ask questions like that! The first step in breaking an addiction is to admit you have a problem ...... and I'm not convinced I want to do that yet

Seriously, I only got back into slot cars about 18 months ago and now have in excess of 130 cars (all rally), so I guess I've bought around 7 a month. The collection is mainly, but by no means exclusively, pre-1987 cars.

My wife has only half an idea of the size of the collection. Partly because she's not that interested, partly because they're stashed in a chest of drawers in the spare room that she rarely goes near, and partly because most get delivered to the local shop to save me missing the postie (and thus enter the house under the radar!). I tend to play down the extent of the collection on the odd occasion that my wife comments. She did happen to open a few drawers the other day and raised an eyebrow. I'm just glad she hasn't yet clocked the overflow car park under the bed

I've bought the majority of my cars on eBay for anything between £5 (old Focus) and £60 (Team Slot 205 ... the most expensive). Otherwise from Pendles, MRE, TopSlots etc when there's a new release I simply couldn't risk not having
. The average is probably around £20-25.

To be fair, I am fairly addicted. What started out as a plan to collect just a handful of the most significant rally cars across the last 40 years, morphed into trying to collect the champion from each year, where available ...... and then their most significant rival(s). But, as I've collected more and more, the guidelines have been stretched way beyond breaking point, to the extent that I'm now looking to put together the top half dozen entries from specific rallies (with the aid of a few reliveries). I guess it keeps me off the streets

My collection varies from 90 to 400 or so cars and changes weekly!

Between my son and I we have 30 odd race cars that we race every week, these cars only get changed if a race class changes or the car get written off. Any damaged race cars are usually stripped for bits for keeping the other race cars going.

To fund the racing I buy and sell "normal" slotcars, hence the big difference in numbers.

I have around 25 cars that I keep in my collection, usually because they have an appeal in some way, like a fly 911, because the engine is in the correct place, a few pioneer cars because of the detail and me being a steve McQueen fan, ninco pro truck and raid, because of the suspension, a escort cossy with a proper manufactered metal chassis, basically cars which are technically different.

I also build alot of unique slotcars like escort pick-up trucks or rusty wrecks or fun stuff like dual engined cars just to experiment really.

Generally it tends to fund itself over a course of a year but I have spend lots some months and made a bit other months!

Don (post 16)...............

Were we separated at birth??? I'm trying to collect one of each of the available rally cars that have won the manufacturer's and driver's world championships from the beginning in 1973. Just one of each model is good enough for me, so I've just got 8 to go. I'm not bothered about having 6x Lancia Deltas, most in similar liveries. Neither am I bothered about the lack of availability of a Delta HF 4wd - I've got a 'Grale and that's enough for me. I'm also collecting cars I consider to be significant, into the bargain. For instance, I've got all the World Rally Cars from 1997-2003.

Most of my collection is "under the radar" as well. Not that Wor Lass would begrudge my collection that much, it's just easier not having to explain my addiction to someone who has an interest level of 1.5 on a scale of 1-100.
I don't smoke, drink much alcohol, or "do" anything chemical.......... Mind, it's probably just as well that she won't go in the attic. I may have a bit explaining to do when we get stairs built, rather than the ladder!

I nearly spat-out a mouthful of coffee at the "overflow car park" comment!

Since I got back into slots a year ago, I've probably spent well into 4-figures on cars, track and the 2x tables. I don't want to think about the expenditure too much. For now, I'm concentrating my funds on building my rally car collection - but I'm trying (and failing most months) to limit myself to £60 per month. I'm actually reining myself in a bit! I've decided to knock race cars (BTCC, LMP amd GTs) on the head and devote myself to rally 100%.

I've probably got about 60 cars. I also tend to go for a few months buying nothing then buy two or three. I try to slip them under the radar and for some strange reason hide them away in a cupboard in my workshop for a couple of months. Then when my wife finally sees it I can say 'Oh, I bought that quite some time ago'.

I point out that slot racing and my RC ship build are my only hobbies and I spend very little on clothes. Whereas she is in a book club and has three wardrobes to my one, and that's half empty.

However, I have a cunning plan, and that is to make my hobby self-financing. Can't say any more right now but watch this space.

My friend Walter Merulli has a vast collection of cars, over 1,600 which he keeps in his parents attic AND about 100 cars that he races, very successfully.

I have around 170/180 cars which are mainly road, rally and tin top racers.I tend to buy maybe 2/3 cars amonth, somtimes more somtimes less. The other half does not really pay attention to what i have as she has no intrest, like me with her shoes,I tell her that its our "pension fund" as the cars will go up in value, not really sure she believes that though.
