well with a little bit of maths right, say each car is £30 right,

for 4-5 cars I could have a nice sub and amp
for 5-6 cars I could have a nice sub, amp and 6x9's
for 7-8 cars I could have a nice big phat amp with 2 12" subs, 6x9's a head unit AND tweeters. OR I could have a nice set of alloys.

for 10 cars I could easily afford any old Ford Xr badged car or a nice project car for example mk2 escort or the like.

for 20 cars, we are looking at 600 quid now what can you buy with 600 quid? hmm
well 2 nice seats a brand new set of alloys and large ones at that, a whole bodykit, a rather zippy zetec engine or v-tec i think not too sure on prices with them.

Reason for this post? well I'm fed up of fly bashing, the trade shows and well generally most things including one of me a levels..

Yep, when you start collecting the numbers add up quickly. I bet a lot of collectors dont realize how much they are in for as they are buying, then whammo they realize how much they have spent. We have about 10 cars now and 2 sets of track and some model kits. So we are basically done buying, we will prolly spend a bit on custom car building and maybe a build a routed track. But no cars for a long while.

On the bright side this is a toy that holds up well to abuse and can hold interest for a long time. You can always put it away for a few months or years then bring it out and have fun again like it is new.

Inte, if you go putting alloys or a bodykit on your car, or buy an XR, you're probably gonna need another 40 cars worth to pay your insurance. And then some little oik comes along and nicks it and your insurance goes up.........

Best stick to the slots mate!

oh, and do not forget the (to be expected) necessary mods, repair and maintenance...
... considering the car of choice I would estimate at least another 40 slotcars worth per year.

oh.. it was a Ford manufactured in the UK you meant? we might need to add another couple of slotcars worth then...

PS: did I mention that slotcars do not usually suffer from rust since most of them are kept in dry condition even if you do use them. And UK is not exactly California... eh, almost where I live though (Hampshire, southcoast UK).

Okay, no squid here, we're in freshwater country
but that 30 pounds per car is about $72 CAN... close, I pay almost that for some like Fly. But rather than think about it in terms of what I could buy for 5 cars, or 10 cars, or 20 cars, I go about it in reverse.

What can I buy for $72? Not too bloody much! 2 cases of beer (okay, that one hurts to pass up...), or 1.5 dinners out, or 0.20 of a rear spoiler for my car, or 0.15 of a new audio amp, or 0.03 of a new PC.... etc.
See... now I'm getting depressed!

Might as well buy the slot car and be happy!

I don't even want to think about the amount of money I've spent on console games over the years, as well as my most recent hobby - slot cars.

Oh well, at least it brings me enjoyment and it's better than pissing it up the wall...

I like to think of it in these terms.

On Wednesday night I raced a Turbo Ferrari F1 car, a go-kart, a Grand wotsit Corvette, a classic Jaguar Xk120, a motorcycle sidecar (!) a Can Am and something else I can't remember right now.

I ran in 32 races, crashed in quite a few and the total cost - cars, entry fees, repairs, etc - was less than cost of a real helmet.

Another way is to flick through the ads in a classic car magazine, pick out three cars you'd have if you won the lottery and realise you can have them as slot cars for less than a £100 and store them in a shoebox under the bed.

oh, and do not forget that you might even be able to do just that more than once a year (buy the slotcars without winning the lottery)!
