If you did much 3D printing you'd realise there's a whole lot more to it. Learning it takes time, a lot of it is empirical and different aspects need their own threads.
If I wanted to know for instance how to mix resins, how to print something bigger than the print bed, how to improve something, how to modify something...etc. etc. etc. you'd never find it here.
This is probably the busiest forum out there but when I need 3D help or wanting to benefit from others experience then I go elsewhere where the info is properly listed for all to find in the future.
Interesting I don't see a theread dedicated to using other tools like routers or chisels on this forum so why should 3D printers need a special thread? I confess I don't print cars, its not my thing but I do spend time creating military models for FDM printing so I have a fairly extensive experience base. When I do have the rare print issue, then yes, specialist sites are the port of call. Slotforum to me is not the best pace for very specialist 3D advice,

Hi Guys,

Interesting thread!

I started about a year ago and got heavily into the layout. As spring came a mountain of problems came with it. Summer is typically a bitch for me. Add to that, my daughter moving (her problems are my problems) and going back to school, I can't tell you the fun I had. Then my hot water tank ...TANKED... filled the house up with natural gas. Yes, that was a treat... gas red tagged, two weeks with no hot water of furnace (not a big deal with the furnace).

Never mind the expense.

Also pissed at a forum I was a long time moderator on... shut down this summer. The guy who owned it was an asshole and instead of letting us run with it, he pulled the plug.

To sum it up, some times, real life gets in the way. I used to sign in pretty regular before that. To be honest, I won't be regular again probably till after Christmas. Instead of things getting slower, they seem to speed up.

Hoping to get out this Wed for some live racing at a friends house ... (no names, Pete, if you are reading this! :p ).

My slot car goals for 2022....
1) get the basement area cleared out for my new design
2) get the track laid out
3) continue working on the diorama

because maybe using a routers and a chisels is not as complicated to set up a 3d printer and software?
I have never used either a routers or a 3d printer (but I have played with some 3d model software).
I feel that if I wanted to route a track I have enough information to do this by looking at some of the track builds in this forum in the track section.
On the other hand, if I want to get started with 3dp I do not feel that confident that I can pull out the right amount of info related to 3dp slot-related thing from this forum.
And while I agree that there are more specialized forums out there, I really do not have the energy to get started somewhere else.
After all I want to print slot related stuff so if others here have read and digested all the necessary 3dp information and just put in the relevant info for 3dp and slotcar in here then I would be more inclined to get a go at it. yeah, I am lazy....

Only real issue I've seen with 3D printing is cost, it's not as bad as it was but you could be still out a few hundred quid which not all can justify for a hobby, I know stuff like Gibbs can take a little while to master but once learned its a valuble skill.
I do agree a subsection in scratch building atleast wouldn't be a bad idea with perhaps a place to upload relavent files but you probably will still see limited input until it's more accesible to the masses, I could really do with one myself but for now just cant afford it.

I do not entirely agree because, like everything in our hobby, it is according to what needs each partner has and especially their abilities. As simple as it may be, nothing is easy if you don't know how to do it. If I now wanted to make mirrors from scratch, is there a tutorial? Is there a search index where SF gives me all the links to topics where they talk about rear view mirrors? There is a lot of data on many subjects, but they are not interrelated with each other, which is what would happen with 3D printing.

Otherwise I agree with you. In the things I do I use design and animation programs, but I would barely know how to configure a home printer ... and I am not exaggerating. So for 3D, you would need that information translated for dummies.

As I mentioned before, it is useless to gather the best information with all kinds of related files, if when you need something in particular, there is no place where all the topics are interrelated.

In my case, I am completely unaware of the subject in 3D and only home printing on paper ... I would be afraid to start if I do not have sequential and relevant information.

Slot cars were my #1 hobby but since lockdown v.1 whilst being furloughed (ultimately made redundant) I bought my first 3D printer and started down the rabbit hole that is 3D printing...it has since become my new #1 hobby and got in the way of my slot car addiction.
3D printing isn't just a small part of the slot car hobby, it's just as big a hobby even if you just focus on slot cars.

When I last noticed the Forum's membership tally a few months ago, the total had just passed 17,000. My new tablet alerted me yesterday to a total that has jumped in a short while to more than 25,000. Astonishing.

Slotting is alive and kicking, eh?

I don't know if this helps you but Phil Smith of scaleslotcars.com has the 1985 New Man 956 in stock at present for just £40. Might be worth looking.
Indeed a very good price! Thanks Laurence, the 1985 is already in the garage, but the 1984 is the one that it’s been evading me hehehe. As far as I’m concerned the only difference between them is a decal in the rear arches of the car, if you have them would be nice to point out the differences in your famous thread of the Porsches😉

Que?? I'm sure I am member no.17-thousand-and-something, and I joined 10 years ago.

Stu, you're right. Five months ago I posted the screenshot below in the Community Feedback thread just after the forum had transitioned to its current platform. Membership then was shown as 24.6K.
