Having kicked about the Williams FW07, I found lurking at the bottom of a box three French Scaley Tyrrell 005s. God know where they can from, but thinks I, it is not bad, but a bit toylike. What can we do here? SO looking at economy of effort, I thought one of them could just get a repaint and better transfers - simples. Then I got ambitious - what about making a 006. Whist it looked the same there were some significant differences - fuel cells and crash zones on the 006, slightly larger air box profil and then that back end....
I also had a couple of Scaley Lotus 49 chassis laying around and as ever, being a cheapskate, I wondered if I might use that as the basis for a better rear end. So off I went. As mentioned I'm not a racer so the quality and speed of the chassis is utterly unimportant to me as they are going to sit in a display case. So I kit bashed the 49 chassis and fitted it. So what did I do?
1 Cut off 005 body behind nose cone and from underneath cockpit, then rebuilt the whole chassis using plastic card.
2. Changed the profile of the airbox to the sightly bigger 006 version.
3. Adapted a '49 chassis as the basis for the chassis and engine, added the extra oil coolers of the 006 at the back adding some wire mesh for effect.
4. Added metal frames for the rear wing struts.
5. New rear wing
6. Driver figure from later scaley, but with a modified Polistil head, visor and sun shield as used bu Francois Cevert
7 Built up new front suspension.
As with the 005, I made my own decals - scanning the painted body to get a colour match for the blue!
Not finished yet - rear wing needs painting , but again it pleases me. I'd love to know a better way that decals of putting the tyre maker stencils on the tyres?
