I run my cars on a Scalextric sport 94FT track and have a high number of them with a Sideways HC 02 Zakspeed Ford Capri flimsy body! and Slot It Nissan Skyline- GTR-32
3 Carrera cars, all 6 colors of the Policar Subaru's cheap little ones almost? indestructible and cheap $39 Aus: Great little cars, not great handlers limited with speed ability
but ideal for the Grand kids and great grand kids. Pioneer Notch Back Mustang this one with original tyres, a Slot It Nissan Skyline-GTR-32
All cars tuned and MJK Urethane tyres trued, except for Pioneer and ad Slot It 0riginal tyres. All tyres trued all cars trued. Preferred running! Love Scalextric! ;)

Finally ordered another 2 Group C cars. 1 is a Jag in Castrol livery. The other one is a Porsche in a new livery for my collection. Happy days.

Just ordered another very cheap Porsche 962 and a spare bodyshell. My intention is to use the spare shell on the chassis of the complete car. The discarded (duplicate of 1 I already have) body will eventually return to the track with a second hand chassis with a few slight modifications for my grandson (stronger magnet, F22 tyres) though no idea when.

I find WASP urethanes work slightly better than F22 rubber with magnet cars on my home track. I don’t know why, but worth a try, anyway.

The 1st 2 parts of Operation "Number 27" have arrived. The chassis motor and lights work fine and the other piece is the headlight lense. Waiting on the donor car and bodyshell.

That looks as though it might be a large American car, Matthew, but I'm probably very wrong. It's very different from the Scalextric car I bought today.

What car did you buy today? The parts are for my 10th Porsche 962, i bought a cheap donor car and the bodyshell that I want. The chassis and headlight lense are to complete the car. The spare bits will be reused in a modified car for my grandchildren. These old Scalextric cars are just great fun.

Wonder if I can persuade my wife I will need another Sauber Mercedes?

I think you need three Sauber team cars all told to be authentic, Matthew. It's a good argument to put forward. A fourth as a spare is always useful, too. I'll keep quiet about the Scalextric car I bought until it arrives, just in case it goes AWOL in the post. Unlikely but possible.

I'd like another Silver Sauber Mercedes, they run well. My donor car has arrived. From this I want the axles and windscreen. I will wash the body as best I can as it has some unusual stickers when I get time. The tyres were worn out so I left the fronts alone after a quick clean and replaced the rear tyres with some Slot It F22 tyres that I've had unopened for some years. I wiped the body over with a cloth damped with lighter fluid and its looking cleaner. Still want to remove those stickers. I'm hoping my Number 27 body will arrive tomorrow.

about loving old Scalextrics… these four are raced as a class on my four lane track: a Jag, a Lambo and two Ferrari’s.
I find much pleasure in restoring the old battered cars into a decent (not perfect) driveable condition. Accepting them as they are, with all their imperfections and limitations, yet a pleasure to make them run as good as possible. Nice detail: all these four have working headlights, tail lights and - wew - braking lights. Stock motors and wheels - but carefully trued new tires, oiled and lubed gears and bushings. And with the Ferrari’s I did some chopwork to lower the front end to get a decent stance. Simply lovely and a joy to race them as a class.

You've hit the nail on the head Merc. These old Scalextric cars look good and have reasonable/fun performance. It's a pleasure to see a car coming together into a complete running car.

I remember somewhere on the Forum about racers asking Scalextric for flat chassis on their cars. The Group C and the above supercars all have flat chassis.

I never thought of that but totally true. Particularly the Jag has a good shape, long and wide with a flat underpan. There’s four screws to attach the body to the underpan, of which I only use the front and rear screw, nicely positioned in the middle of the car’s width.
I cut away a bit of the edges to permit body float. One other important improvement, performance wise: good soft braids. I have a roll of Scx braid that’s very good. Plus I filed the guide flag thin so the front sits lower on the track.

There’s a lot of vertical play in the front axle but that can be cured with glueing some plastic to limit the vertical travel (haven’t done that though).

I had a good laugh about myself when I fixed the Jag. For some mysterious reason the car was strangely slow in tighter right hand curves. I checked all kinds of possible causes, like left wheels rubbing the bodywork, braid to track contact, etc - until I finally found out out the left rear wheel was spinning loose on the (round, not knurled) rear axle! The car was driving seemingly fine with only traction on the right rear wheel - lol. That was an easy fix with some superglue.
The stance of the Jag is pretty good I think, it’s a fine model and I think one of Scalextric’s best cars from that era.

We have a ‘Scalextric 90s Legends’ class at the club for the F40, XJ220, Diablo and 911 GT1. They scrub up nicely. Generally on our track the F40s and Porsches go best.

Entire childhoods were built on images like these. That we can still buy a Scalextric car for the price of a garden spade is pretty good value, especially after experiencing the kind of misery a garden spade can bring.

Somehow I find driving an old but well prepped Scalextric more satisfying than a state of the art high end car (say an NSR, thunder slot, scaleauto or Slotit).
In comparison the scalextrics are quite limited in their performance, but still quite pleasant to race. Getting the most out of that limited material is what it makes so satisfying I guess. Or maybe I’m just weird in this.

I agree with you Merc, which is why we've been racing Scalextric GP cars every Thursday for years. We also race a number of standard Carrera cars, which are also great fun. Each has a pair of rear 'urethanes for extra grip and, frankly, for home use, it's all that's needed.

A couple of bog standard GP cars I race on a regular basis. Quick, well planted and great fun. Also, they're virtually unbreakable.

Superb, I like the pictures in the old Scalextric catalogues, great art.

Just to say, Operation "Number 27" is complete, the body arrived today. I haven't ran it but it looks brilliant. The body looks almost new.
