Love SCX

As per the Scalextric topic, I’d like to shine a spotlight on SCX cars.
They’re not the fastest cars, but somehow their speed is exactly right for my taste. Permitted it has a decent motor, because the biggest flaw with SCX is their inconsistent motoring of their models. I have pretty quick cars with an RX42B motor but also sluggish ones with the RX42. It’s never clear what’s under the bonnet.

Set aside that biggest flaw, once they’re run in I find many of their models a joy to drive.
These three especially: the Porsche, the Ferrari and the Seat.

Most modern SCX cars have a nice feature: a simple yet effective floating subchassis where motor and rear axle are placed, which permits body float and independent movement of the motor / rear wheels department. Front wheels are in general free of excessive play and form a sturdy front setup.
This gives the car - with simple measures - a pretty good road behaviour.
Wheels / tires in general are decent and easy to true. Some go round my track so quietly, it’s as if there’s alloy wheels attached: perfectly round and true.

the Seat in particular is a joy. It’s extremely wide, look how narrow the Porsche is in comparison.
It’s perfectly controllable in curves, it “hangs” on the throttle and I can control the amount of sliding with ease.

All in all I think SCX cars are as limited as Scalextrics, so no high end cars - but with such clever simple subchassis solutions, easy to improve their handling and pretty good on the track. A joy to race them! Now only they should fix their inconsistent motor line up 😊

My Loeb Citroen's rear wing has been droopy since I bought it, which is why it continues to rattle and clatter about in use. I could glue if into place, but don't mind the clattering too much.

I have the SCX 2CV four wheel drive rallye version too. It’s a brilliant piece of engineering, the body can severely lean over in corners just like the 1:1 car, which makes it pretty undriveable on the track. I glued 15 grams of weight under the underpan and now it stays in the slot while leaning in the curves. Utterly funny to drive now!

My slotting chum, Nicholas, has the 4WD 2CV, which I've always found to be fun. Not a contender for thrashing an NSR 917, but the slotting scene would be poorer without it.

Nicholas's face below sums up the 2CV rather well...

I thought this was originally a bit lethargic so swapped the 'new style' SCX motor for a good old fashioned double pro rally, OK it's still only 21k at best but one of the easiest cars to drive and is more than a match for most of the clubs SlotIt Opels...apart from the lightweight interior, Slotingplus guide, SlotIt crown, lead ballast, NSR wheels/tyres on the back and independently rotating front wheels...it's bog standard :ROFLMAO:

If there was a quicker SCX motor the SlotIt Opels would be watching it's rear end from afar...

Ferrari 550 Maranello is a favourite, this one hasn't seen the track yet but I have one with a SlotIt SW pod and it's a fantastic race car.

Don't know why I bought this one but looks nice, Opel Astra DTM

...and then a few Rally cars and a couple of Dome Judds, most are runners, some are fixer-uppers

I have the two SCX rally junior cars, the Ford and Citroen from the basic rally set and they run really well. Boxed and not yet used are the Escort Mk2's and a well used Subaru which just keeps on going. The one I was really interested in is the ProRace Citroen, which is nice to run, but noisy once the lid is on.

Yes the ProRace Citroen Xsara is a belter of a car. I have one that has the chassis side plates replaced with brass pans and is easily my best 4WD Rally car.
Just back from local toy fair, and couldn't walk pass this for £5, now have 6 of them

In the looks department, the first 911 GT3 at the beginning of the Tyco Matchbox era is terrible. And the Mini is really not good, although it can be forgiven for being a re-pop of a 50 year old design.

As for driving pleasure, the 2CV didn't give the usual "get it out the box and run a load of laps" experience.
Yeah but no but yeah but… that 911 is still a better shape than, say, Revoslot!

And only you would think about deriving pleasure from a 2CV. And why model the most obscure of the breed when a Dolly/Charleston would’ve sold by the boatload?!

There are a few SCX cars in my garage and although LMP cars are not my favourite class by a long shot this has got to be my favourite SCX car.
It's not the fastest car but it is the car I could push the hardest for longest and often ended at the pointy end of the field.

I like the Audi R8 pro too, mine has a Flat6 25k glued in as even a quick SCX motor is just too bland.

I do like SCX rally cars, but they`re sadly outpaced nowadays by other manufacturers. :(

Another unusual one picked up in Barcelona 20 years ago - I got a book with it! Two cars, the first car to be made in spain and an updated version with all the gubbins:

I wonder, does someone can say a thing about the SCX F1 cars? I have some Ninco F1 cars, lovely cars with steering front wheels, and (not initially but now all of them) with NC 2 motors fitted.
I never bought a SCX F1, they come with steering front wheels too, and I reckon with slow motors. I wonder how they are, compared with the Ninco’s?
