The wife as usual dragged me around the shops on Saturday. Whilst out i wondered into a Games workshop Store. if you don't know this is one of those stores that sells wargamming, dungoens and dragons stuff. Anyhow they had a couple of boards set out with some great scenery on them fantastic detail. i asked one of the guys in the shop how they make their buildings and layouts. He was very usefull and talked me through how he'd made some little cottages and a ruined castle. I bought a book on making wargames terrain and it's brilliant some great tips for making terrain, buildings, But the instructions / tips on building bridges are fantastic and really got me thinking. The book has to be my best bargain so far this year it only cost £8.

Anyhow just thought i'd share this experience with you all.
Does any one else have a good source for tips on makeing building's or creating scenery?

Model Railroad shops will usually have several books on scenery design and fabrication, often illustrating different methods and materials. The one that I use was published by A.C.Kalmbach, the publisher of the "Model Railroader" (U.S.) magazine.

does anyone do decent slot racing backdrops then to paste to a static back board??-have already checked out most model railway scenic panoramas and most are either unsuitable or drawn by a 7yr old so it seems

Well, it's odd that my first post here should be about gaming terrain but I found this site with molds for plaster casting bricks a while back:

You probably won't want a Gothic Graveyard on your layout

but they do have some other molds that resemble concrete slabs and conventional bricks which could work for slot racing.

For example, here is a concrete bunker that I built using their "station builder" mold:

This kind of idea could easily be adapted to make a marshals post say or just concrete walling...

There is also a wealth of information to be found relating to figure painting war gaming models in magazines like "White Dwarf" and on the web and this could be a real inspiration when it comes to painting up those SRA figures, etc...

notice the painted shadows and highlighting on the clothing for example.

nice site, I have a question about your layout:

What are you using for the grass? It looks better than most of the scatter matts etc I have seen, or maybe its just better done.

Hi astro and thanks for the comments. You are right about the grass being different. On the new circuit I used "static grass". You can get this from Games Workshop or most hobby shops that are clued up on model railway scenary, etc.

Basically I used ceiling tiles to raise the infield as described on my previous track. I then painted this with watered down green and brown acrylic art paints until I got a muddy field greeny/brown/khaki type effect.

Once dry I painted on a 50-50 mix of PVA glue and water and then sprinkled on the static grass. If you blow on it a little as it settles it helps the grass stand up and you get a nice realistic effect.

It feels nice too
