mexico restoration

i am currently restoring a scalextric mk1 escort mexico from a pretty sorry state. i quite fancy finishing it off with rs 2000 style stripes rather than the mexico type which seem readily available. does anyone manufacture the rs style decals? i am not quite up to re-creating them myself.

Good choice of wheels imho.

cheers. its turned out pretty much how i had in mind. obviouly the shell isnt as acurate and pretty as the current offering from scalextric but at least now the decals look the part. the wheels came to me in a flash of inspiration....and cheaply too....off a taunus high impact thing. i think they are about as good as you could get without finding a deep dished minilite/superlight style wheel (which i've not seen in 1/32). i have thought about trimming down some of the standard 4 spoke "rs style" rims and fitting the centres into a larger , modern wheel , with a lower proile tyre. i think that could work on a capri as well as an escort?

Well done, glad you finally got your decals and you managed to build the car that you really wanted.
Can we see some other angles please?

Very good, are the decals a "one off" special order or did you get lucky?
Paint looks really smooth, did you flat & polish or what?

Still looking for bullet mirrors?

cheers dj. i certainly got lucky...the original supplier i was hoping to use fell through but then i found this seller (hopalong_sam) on ebay who was just about to do them.he's a great guy to deal with. i am quite pleased with the finish on the paint. i just wish i had spent a little more time on prep but it was a real troll to start off with. to be honest though pictures really highlight any ropey bits , in the flesh it does look pretty good. i didnt flatten the paint (rattle can acrylic , generic "white"), just a good cut once hardened with 3m finesse-it and then autoglym super resin polish. comes up like a babys bum!! i've not been actively looking for mirrors but would definately like a set , or 3! do you have or know of any?
Saico E-Type Jaguars have quite nice mirrors - Ebay sale that I have no connection with. Seller has 2 lots to provide 6 mirrors and you could probably do something with the left overs.

No sorry I don't have any mirrors, just remembered you asking about some and thought they'd look good on your Escort.

True the old shell doesn't have all the detail of the latest offering but it does have the shape and there's something "just right" about the old car. Much easier to fit the big wheels too, no room for anything like that on the new release.

cheers for the "heads up" on those leo. i normally go with a bit of lateral thinking but it hadn't occured to me to search for chep diecasts to rob!

i think i may have a play with a spare chassis too and see if i cant tuck it a bit tighter up under the shell and tube the front axle too. mk1's have got to be low!

i found a better shot of the paint finish.

Fab wheels - off a Taurus NASCAR. Smaller tyres though. Looks the business.

And a very impressive paint finish on the white body. How did you achieve it?
Hey Pete nice rebuild of a scrapper will the chassis be modified so its raceable. I re engineered a rs1600 start with the chassis made it fit the shell properly by cutting down the glass and interior posts . Where the rear chassis tab sit in the shell 3mm was removed. Ground down the underside of the guide post by 4mm made locking spacer placed inside to stop guide flapping about . Fixed front axel in place added a little lead fitted not so wide axels with true running standard wheels with trued tyres . In this set up the car sits lower with its wheels tucked in running Mabuchi motor . The car runs fantastic on plastic or wood and its proper raceable...
c'mon luckyfour , we need some pictures of that car , sounds like a flyer!

doesn't look like you will get any replies from petestrike though guys. does anyone know what the story is there??
Don't know what happened there? Looked through Pete's posts and nothing contentious, no idea why he got the boot, very strange and a bit sad really.
Hey Gordon I will join photobucket so I can post some pic soon I also have xr3 built the same will get picture of both ...
pictures definitely required. photobucket is easy stuff , ideal.

all a bit "beyond the grave". perhaps one of the mods can enlighten us as to what happened? certainly seems odd.
Yeah that'll happen, the mods are always explaining their actions aren't they?

If they didn't inform Pete why he got the boot they're not likely to tell us.

I know the guy and he was had his accout terminated for nothing more than complying with a request from a moderator to change an avatar. aparantly the moderator in question was particularly agressive.
What a shame it couldn't be sorted without giving Pete the boot, seems a bit unnecessary, it's not like he tried to punch his producer or anything.
Pete contributed some good stuff to the forum and appeared to be a decent guy, please give him my best regards if you're in touch with him.

Come on Mods, what's going off? We can ill afford to lose good members for no good reason.

Please be assured that we - the mod team - never work and act alone - we discuss issues, discuss reactions and then we act. In other words we moderate the team as well.

99% of the time we react to complaints from you !!

Make NO mistake we did not boot petestrike for only the reasons stated. Or anyone else for that reason!

So Fishguts - why dont you have the GUTS to say who you are? I mean 5 posts and 2 are pops at the mod team? Obviously a disgruntled person who deliberately changed his ID (or set up a second one to deliberately be antagonistic) and doesnt have the guts to be out in the open?
