Monte - Six of the best

We may only be talking about nine first class cars this year, with at best three proven first class drivers (and I’m still not convinced about Tanak), dollying out from Monaco on their electric motors to do repeated loops of stages… but the Monte is still the Monte.

Crystal skies, frosty verges, spotlights on… lovely. And WRC2 is going to be a lip-smacker of a feast this year.

So to warm us up, here’s some crackers from down the ages… split into two posts to get the preview screens to work.

The more recent ones…

1993

2002

I do enjoy watching Pathe motorsport films, not just Rally but early years Grand Prix.

Hope they get a decent dump of snow, recce and testing clips on YT are dry and sunny, more like Tour de Corse.

Snow's been the exception rather than the rule most years but it can certainly make things prettier!

Agreed... that 1993 one is an absolute stonker, though. Production values through the roof and crowds as mad as they come.
Plenty of excellent footage on YouTube of the the teams shakedowns/testing,
This year's Yaris has lost the characteristic side scoops of last year's cars.
The latest WRC 2 Skoda's look tasty as well, with all the liveries available might we see a new mould from SCX
Piccies on the net today of this year's M Sport Red Bull livery, Malcolm has gone on record as a push for the drivers title ,he accepts the resources and funding available isn't a match for Toyota and Hyundai.

That's too logical for SCX. Also, no Spanish drivers called Dani.

I'm sort-of hoping that they release the BMW recce cars that Hyundai uses, though. It's probably more likely... although I'd be delighted to be proved wrong.

Still haven't tried a modern 2WD/Mabuchi SCX release yet. We ran the RX-motor 4WD class at the club tonight, though, as a timely reminder that very few manufacturers have made cars that are as pleasant to drive. The Nincos of that era are faster of course but the SCXs are just bringers of great joy, whether hammering round together or just banging in some laps.

It's not about the speed,I agree, it's about the enjoyment, slowly sideways methinks.

Hmmm you may deride it ,fair enough, put a roundy roundy F1 prima Donna in a WRC and I'd suspect we'd watch them struggle a bit.
On a positive note, there's an interesting vid on YouTube I've recently tripped over, putting the wrap on Tanaks 2023 car.
Does that swap drivers into different series and watch them struggle, at least initially, go both ways? What with these being extreme driving machines?

Whatever, a slap for washing your car is a fine headline to start the weekend with.

That's like expecting a badminton player to be competitive in a game of squash...both have string rackets and run round a court.
Meaning I think ,others may think otherwise, fine, that drifting a WRC at full chat between trees takes more skill and large round ones than steering a Red Bull around Austria with run off areas wider than the track
Well. Now. You see. I would argue, from this here comfy chair and with my wealth of experience, that experience in your chosen four-wheeler counts for a lot.

If you decided circuit racing was for you, early doors, then your skills develop that way. If you were hooning an Escort round yer daddy's fields as soon as you could reach the pedals then... your skills develop that way.

Cajones-wise, I think it no contest - rally drivers, and perhaps rally co-drivers even more so, have guts.

Or are insane.

Or both.

Hypocritically, it is nice, on that side of things, to watch a TubeYou video of highlights every now and then but I turned out once for the WRC, got rather cold and wasn't overwhelmed.

This chat and another private one has me minded to look for those highlights this weekend and see how whelmed I get. 🤗

It's also making me realise I really must eBay off some of my rally cars that have sat in dark boxes going nowhere for years.

Flogging older Scx Rally cars on flea bay will lead to plenty of dosh crossing your palm in due course.

And this is why I posted in the scratch building about whether I could fit an rx81 into my msc Impreza!

I think people looked at me as if I had 2 heads. That’s what it felt like anyway.

on the subject of wrc it took all live1.5 stages to crash this year. Ironically at the same time neuville went off!

edit apologies for the double quote trying to reply to this thread on my iPad has been extremely painful

I guess this is where people differ because one of my ‘happy places’ is driving up the A5 from Oswestry or down to Newtown from Welshpool, towards the Welsh forests or at stupid o’clock in the morning in the anticipation of watching rally cars in beautiful surroundings.

will try to get to as many British championship and BTRDA national events as I can this year and as a photographer it’s so much better than being at a bland circuit with miles of gravel (or tarmac) and uninspiring vistas
