More Airfix Beetles

This is what happens when passion gets out of hand. A clutch of Airfix Beetles on PCS chassis. Despite appearances no two are the same, and all have different characteristics on track. Fun to build but tricky in parts. Thank you again for your time in looking.

Thanks to Pendle I now have all the bits and pieces to modify this Pink-Kar Beetle, which I hope to start next week. Want to try it with a PCS chassis and 13in wheels. If it's a success, and I can't see a reason why it shouldn't be, I'll swap the 18k Mabuchi for something daft. View attachment 300737

I see no reason why Pendle's PCS chassis kit wouldn't improve the Scalextric Beetle out of all recognition, especially if used in conjunction with 13in wheels and tyres. Anyhow, the Pink-Kar conversion will be underway soon, so I'll report back on progress as I go.

Mike,

Try adding a few blocks of lead to the bottom of the Scalex Beetle. It's a whole different animal with some weight. You got nothing to lose. You can always remove it.

I'm enjoying all of your Beetle related builds Laurence, all very "Beettleishous".

I need to pull my finger out.

If uprating the motor and possibly adding a driver, although maybe not, would you need to add some glue to the drivers' head so he doesnt lose his syrup due to the higher speeds?

I rather like the idea if glueing drivers' heads to an inner roof panel. The local parish council could start a campaign against John Deere man up 'ere in the hills for starters, and progress to local farmers who run stinky, knackered, ill-maintained Land Rovers.

Dear Toto

Despite initial misgivings about fitting the turbo Flat-6, and a revised spec rear wing, my latest Beetle shows no early signs of porpoising. I can only suggest, therefore, that you follow my lead, and invest £17.50 in a PCS chassis kit from Pendle for Lewis, and if it works, buy another to shove under George as well.

I know, I know, you're burdened by a budget cap, and £35 is a bit steep, but you can get around this financial burden by getting Suzie a Mothering Sunday prezzie from the bargain basement selection in ALDI's 'middle
row'. Fluffy trinkets this week starting at £3.99. We all have to make sacrifices nowadays, so no point in moaning. And maybe a new set of headphones for yourself after smashing that last pair in Abu Dhabi.

Incidentally, any luck in teaching Mark Webber how to pronounce Porsche properly yet, or is he still struggling with duosyllabic vocab?

Anyhow, please let me know how you get on. Always interested in porpoises.

Now that was funny Laurence.

However I think Toto will have more luck finding a large "Dorothy" in a pair of ruby slippers, large enough to tuck our Toto under her arm, close her eyes, click her heels 3 times and say "theres no place like home" so he can wake up back in 2014 at the start of the 8 year successive run.
You never know, stranger things have happened!

Apart from the need to paint and fit a driver, another Airfix Beetle is just about finished. Won't try it on the Mess until sundry transfers have dried. Our weekly slot meeting after this evening's trough. Dunno what we're racing yet, but it won't be too far away from the usual dollop of fine machines from Wolfsburg and Zuffenhausen.

Thank you all again for your interest, comments and for looking in. Always a pleasure.

Hope you've got no plod on the mesh as they won't like the location of the rear reg. 😄 🤣 😇

OK, many chuckles here. Well done, sir. I initially wondered if the Beetle was due to have a dual element wing itself, given the HP of the Flat 6.

A simply beautiful finish Laurence! One could shave in it if they were a mind to.

Guaranteed, it'll fly without the wing, LOL

The flat 6 ...? It isnt just a Volkswagen; but I'm content to let folks think that way. Starting with counter balanced cranks, forged rods, domed pistons with relief pockets, SOHC with hemi heads, valve size and port matched for the cam grind. Dry sump oiling. Massive induction set ups including MFI. Equal length tuned headers hidden under the heat exchanger skins. CD ignition by Bosch. Available with a baffle-less muffler and tunable megaphones. Twin plug available. From mild to wild.

The early road going 911 six started at 2 liters in with 130 or 160 hp. Various increases in bore up to 2.8 liters, and a lengthened stroke, produced road going hp up to 310 hp depending on year, and the tuning package. The options list was mind boggling. An astronomically priced 2.9 liter Mahle P&C kit to slip fit in the 2.7 engine case became available years later.

911, 911S, 911R 911L 911T 911E 911RS 911RSR: All predate the first Turbo Carrera in '76 (3 liters) A period known affectionately as "Alphabet Soup".

***

I'd be more worried about the brakes bring able to haul it in, AND configuring a triangulated rear motor mount to keep from tearing that little Kaefer in two. Needs a 914 trans with a flipped ring gear to make use of all the extra snort. I can see it now!

Chappyman and Bill

My thanks to you both again. Marvellous contributions.

On top of the mind-boggling 911 list, Bill, there were the Stage 1, 2 and 3 tuning kits Porsche offered to 911 customers wanting to compete at Le Mans (and elsewhere). The list of available options seemed to go on for ever, and despite the huge additional cost of tuning improvements, there were plenty of takers.

I dread to imagine what Porsche charge for a free-range, oven-ready, Le Mans-prepped 911 today but, as we see every year, there are many hopefuls, thankfully, who deem it to be all worthwhile. It amuses me greatly (in a benign way) to see 911s still racing at Le Mans today, because work started on the project in 1960!

Could anyone have foreseen that 62 years later, updated versions would still be circulating at a competitive level in GT racing? Extraordinary by any standards. The old Prof might even have allowed himself a wry smile.

Started to build this PCS chassis kit up today, but can go no further for now. As on many occasions in the past, there are vital parts missing from the kit. Both eyelets are absent, and there's no grub screw to hold the crownwheel to the back axle.

Really useful! If it were an isolated, one-off incident, I wouldn't mind, because we all make mistakes, but it's not, and I'm getting really, really fed up with it. Yes, I'm moaning.

Even more useful! Just opened another new PCS chassis kit from Pendle to discover that the grub screw is also missing from the second contrate gear...

Two brand new kits and both are utterly useless. Not acceptable!

Notwithstanding missing parts from two PCS chassis kits, I'll do what I can to press ahead with the Pink-Kar Beetle's chassis conversion. Both front and rear body mounts are intrusive, in the wrong place and have been snipped off. A pity but it wasn't an option to keep 'em.

Apparently a bag or spare grub screws is in order. I use them as alternate to ferrules (yes I know) and for front axle height adjustment so a few spares are always about.
But yes...a kit must be complete. That is what you are paying for, after all.

You don't suppose someone in the chip van......nahhhh.

Grrrrrr! At a minimum, missing bits should be punishable by ducking, or maybe catapult for extremely moronic omissions.

That gold color has really grown on me!

The first time I could not assemble a car due to a missing set-screw. I immediately placed a bulk order for a complete box of 100 set-screws.

That's when it also occured to me that I might have something called a "stockpiling disorder". On the bright side. I rarely run out of anything. Below are the 2mm set-screws.

Laurence. Kindly PM your address and a plain letter should arrive in the mail. I change out all my flat-tipped Slot.It set-screws (on the right side) for hardened hollow points (on the left side).

Ken, if you think you have that, then I think I have it in spades... this is just one of many boxes, but is the main one for slotcars. NB - don't go by my numbers if you are looking for replacement screws - some of my label information is wrong.
