More Airfix Beetles

This is what happens when passion gets out of hand. A clutch of Airfix Beetles on PCS chassis. Despite appearances no two are the same, and all have different characteristics on track. Fun to build but tricky in parts. Thank you again for your time in looking.

Aha! Well done, Ken. A very bad influence indeed. I've done the same. Chucked a small HO die-cast in the shopping trolley each week, and eventually ended up with over 400. They sit in a plastic box hiding under a pile of shirts where Mrs Grumpy can't see them.

I've always been interested in HO gauge but, alas, it seems that the British market is severely limited.

Ken

Not slot cars, of course, but a small selection from my HO collection. Now, I shall return them to a dark corner and re-bury 'em under a pile of rags that Mrs Grumpy objects to being described as shirts.

And what's more, Laurence... They don't have to be black! :p

So I understand, Grumpy. Might be branching out soon-ish. Blue and green have taken my fancy of late, although the '37 prototypes currently being perfected by Frogeye will, of course, be painted in more authentic pre War shades. Lots to do as usual.

A motoring combo from the 1960s that isn't much modelled nowadays. 'Twould be rather nice - summat different - to be able to buy a refreshments' van from Scalextric today. It would add something of a nostalgic dimension to most dioramas, but probably wouldn't be a big seller. Competition for the greedy slob who runs the chip van, too.

Frogeye tells me that his 1-32-scale resin bodyshell, representing the VW30 Beetle prototype, is ready to go, which is the best news I've learned since... I've been excused from going on holiday for at least three months.

The second bodyshell should reach me by next week once the postman's horse has been rested, watered and fed, so I can soon get cracking on 2023's projects. This means, of course, that I shall buy a new storm coat to weather all the Force 10s for getting glue on the kitchen table, paint on the cooker and gravy down my jumper. Plus, of course, there's the usual horror of my new crop of Jerusalem artichokes to which I shall look forward at Michaemas.

Gawd 'elp me. Gawd 'elp us all.

Looks excellent(y). You're going to need some longer axles to get the wheels looking right 😁
Yep. Reckon you're right, Keith. 42mm axles should be about right, but I stand to be corrected, of course.
Just wated the beginning of the 1st episode of Doc Martin on Tv and yes red Beetles do float 😁

As Laurence taught us. If at first you don't succeed (at building 100+ Beetles). Build another Beetle!!! :D

I'm on it! :geek:

Is the cream car a 1/43rd diecast of the VW30 in your post?

Here's my 1/32nd version. Based on the Arii beetle kit with a section taken out of the width. I think the axles need to be nearer to 38mm depending on the wheels used.

Paint is grey primer with a Humbrol enamel metalcote wash. Wheel inserts are my own castings.

Thanks for looking.

Another great masterwork, Michael, with equally superb alpine pics. All abfab and I'm certain that the old Prof would have approved. And thanks for your advice about axle width.

The car I showed earlier is a 1:43- scale model with a resin body, which I think I bought in France years ago. Until the advent of your new car, the 43rd-scale prototype is the only other one I've seen.

After Swindon (short for Swine Town!) tomorrow, I shall order chassis and get down to 'work.'

Thank you, Michael. Mine has just arrived courtesy of an electrically-propelled postman. A truly excellent piece of work, to which I'm greatly looking forward to building.

Perfect, Michael. Which reminds me... The newspapers predicted snow so I got all togged up in my skiing gear (as below) only to discover that not one flake had fallen. Beast from the East, my bottom.

A truly excellent, if cold, visit to the Swindon swapmeet today, but I can't break cover on purchases until tomorrow. Upon arrival at the homestead, I quickly spotted that Mrs Grumpy was mooching around tapping and prodding sundry bags and containers with her new device.

It's a Slot Ometer Detection Information Trap (or SOD IT) for short that gives information on new slot purchases, including price, colour, make and likelihood of future expenditure. You have to be a step ahead of a wife wielding such dangerous technology, and I was.

Ready for the inevitable grilling I smiled a lot, and deflected attention by asking about Scottish poetry and its devastating effect on the people of Budapest. It worked... for the time being. Cunning and well worth considering. Plus, slightly spooky.
