More Airfix Beetles

This is what happens when passion gets out of hand. A clutch of Airfix Beetles on PCS chassis. Despite appearances no two are the same, and all have different characteristics on track. Fun to build but tricky in parts. Thank you again for your time in looking.

‘All makes work for the working man to do . . . ‘
Too true, Mark, and now I've got to drive to the B-I-Y (Bodge-It-Yourself) shop for more paint.

Couldn't be bothered in the end, Mark. Had intended to buy a tin of black paint, but have stuck with grey. The thought of traffic today won even over a black Beetle.

Cooked a couple of fish instead ahead of this evening's weekly meeting of racing, imbibing, abuse and cheating on the Mess. The abode now stinks of mackerel.

Mrs Grumpy will be 'pleased'.

Having wiped blood away and applied bandages after building Mrs Grumpy's new wood store (the latest fad) I'll try to answer your question. Airfix/Revell kits are all excellent quality so please buy one that appeals to you.

For a further £15 Pendle do a complete PCS chassis kit, which couldn't be easier to build. I'm shortly to start a new Porsche and, if it's any help, I can easily post a step-by-step guide to construction. Please shout. This thread has a Beetle building guide from page 56.

Having acquired all the bits, the next stage is to buy your wife a new pair of shoes. It softens the blow when you get glue on the dining table, and paint on walls in the kitchen...

Incidentally, if Mrs Grumpy starts reading this Forum, I'll probably ring for two ambulances. I'll be off to A&E with severe bruising in one, and Mrs Grumpy will be conveyed to the local Nonsense Palace for a spell of residential healing in the other...

More anon.
Laurence,
Many thanks for the kit and chassis guidance and your excellent Beetle build guide, which I have read previously but will no doubt return to again for reference. I will keep a watchful eye for upcoming deals on said items from the usual (or even unusual) sources.
I, as I am sure others, will be most interested to read/watch any new constructions you have planned and especially your proposed new Porsche build.

I no longer have to please anyone other than myself as the last one left in a "huff".

A combination of things brought everything to a head, the "final straw" being, me buying and wrapping a brand new set of wiper blades for her car as a Christmas present (one of many), as every time we took her car she always complained the screen was dirty and wouldn't clear (not surprising as half the blades were missing and used to drive me mad), but she didn't have time to get them replaced. I thought said "gift" would be well recieved, instead it went down like the proverbial Lead balloon.
There's just no pleasing some people. So much for thinking I was being practical and helpful!

Back to sq rt one. Bit of a catastrophe - again. Paint drying well in bright sunshine. Mrs Grumpy's cat jumps up with friendly greeting, and swishes her tail along the Beetle's left flank...

"Why has the cat got grey paint on her tail?" barked Mrs Grumpy with an accusatorial baritone in her voice.

"It's this autumn's fashion along the catwalks of Paris," I replied. "All very Jean-Paul Gaultier, apparently, dear lady."

."You total bl**dy stupid imbecile..." she proffered in retort.

I smiled, seraphically, and wondered how many words there are in English beginning with 'eff'...

Ah well, start again. View attachment 282002
You better make sure you clean paint stripe from Mrs Grumpy's feline friend as, if memory serves, French Skunks can easily mistake accidentally identified cats, leading to unwanted amorous advances and ultimately all kinds of mayhem!!

PS: could you please make some recommendations based upon your knowledge and experience on likely kits for conversion (Airfix?) as I would be interested in giving one (or more) a go.

Cheers,
Martin
Hi Martin,
May I suggest you start small and only buy one of everything. You'll soon have a favorite. ;)

We have fun building and racing slot cars, but this is rarely the end of the story. There's always something to do, and moan about if you're so inclined.

Whilst racing this Beetle last Thursday evening, the windscreen dropped out. Good job I had a spare because I haven't seen the original one since.

All well again soon.

Like new! I agree Blue looks nice and its good for a change 😉

About accidents when racing... Yesterday went to practice to Slot Club Ferreria for the II Summer Endurance Tournament scheduled this september 25 and also carried some Maserati GT3 just for fun, I had been leaning all the afternoon on the border barrier thats in the Blue lane right at the bridge(that cuts about half a second in a regular lap), when suddendly the back fender of the Maserati gets stuck in the barrier and gets ripped off! After only two laps and first run out of the box😭

That's an impressive bit of damage, Daniel, for only two laps...

Back to 356 Porsches.

Amen to that Laurence 😉

The 3dp monocoque body would prevent such accidents on the 356 hehehe.

Plastic fools assemble for release of a new VW. Pity they've got nothing better to do. Too early to celebrate so Captain Haddock stands a small chance of sobriety for a short while.

Will wait for transfers to dry before maiden laps around the Mess.

My grateful thanks for your interest.

What a start to the new week. Another battle at the village shop with confused locals struggling to spot the difference between a loaf of bread and the Daily Telegraph...

The greatest school of human endurance, and if that wasn't bad enough, I arrived home to discover that Bela Bartok is this week's Composer Of The Week on BBC Radio 3! Scheesch, what a pointless and discordant racket.

All better now, though. The latest Beetle exceeds expectation. Bits lubricated, tyres sanded and off it went. Maiden laps a sheer pleasure. Can't wait to race it on Thursday. Hurrah.

Nice build Laurence 💘 the new light shade of black, if this continues the suppliers of black paint pigment will be getting a little worried😄

Fear not, Keith. Back to black for the next one. Or even black over yellow. Don't mind either as long as yoof can't imagine it to be 'cool' or trendy.

Have some doubts about the performance of the said VWs Laurence.
1)What cars do you race them with /against?(regardless of the class).
2) What would be the equivalent in slot racing(eg. A Renault Clio)
3) What group car/class does it belongs to?

Cheers
