The Digital Pro system to be released later is going to have PC based software.

This is all interesting stuff and there is a lot here for the home alone racer in terms of the arcade mode and even for just the standard 2 racers in terms of pursuit. Who said digital was all about racing with 3 or more racers on the same 2 lane circuit?

In fact I can see a group of Slotforum members getting together who have digital at home and competing to get the best arcade mode scores for their cars on the basic circuit that comes with the set, and publishing their scores on the site or in a chat room somewhere. I am sure that those with digital will form their own discussion groups to get the best out of the new systems.

What we could do with at Slotforum is a slot car dating agency which enables like minded people to agree times and places to meet up to combine several digital sets and create mega digital circuits permitting groups of people to get together and race in a friendly home environment with a few beers. It seems to happen in the USA so why not in the UK?

Remember we are now talking 6 car racing at home so all of a sudden there could be a pool of willing racers prepared to turn up at a Digital Slot Car Party.

This would suit those who simply want to enjoy slot racing at home without the formalities and costs of club racing.

I suppose it all boils down to the age old UK problem of space at home.

It really needs third party accomodation and then you are talking expense again.

The fact that Hornby have made reference to PC software in the fact sheet nr2 today and in connection with the NASCAR racing mode would lead one to a conclusion of yes.

There is probably a USB port in the side of the digital command station.

why do you need a computer for digital?

Understandably for that t'internet whatsit but for digital seems somewhat.. pants!

Also, have scalextric listened to our moans and gripes about their controllers?

They burn out, they burn out because the resistance is WAAAAAAAAY too high!

Everything is connected via universal serial buses now anyway

Do the Electronic controllers have resistors?

The accounts to date suggest that they do have good feel in terms of the correlation between the trigger action and the car on the track.

And the software will bring with it further features including most of the features of SPORTSWORLD I suspect and may well be aimed at club users and larger groups of racers presumably including the ability to drive large plasma TV screens and sound no doubt. These are the sort of things you need in the 21st century to draw your typical pub football viewer to slot cars and to generate large audience participation. The new breed of slot car club will be located in a room in a pub and with arrangements that have a high degree of transportability. The noise and excitement will draw the crowd into the room and when they see the big plasma screen they will be hooked. And alchohol and armchair comfort aswell!

No doubt there is a degree of symbiosis with SPORTSWORLD although SPORTSWORLD is for analogue users remember.

Do you know if this will be compatible with the imminent Digital product?

Sport Digital has a laptimer and modes built into a small module that sits by the track like the old Sport laptimer.

Sport Digital Pro has a connection to the PC and has the full blown software allowing track design and racing. The same RMS type software that Sport World will use. Preview here.

These things cost a small fortune.

No they are not.
First of all, drink and driving anything is a ridiculous combination.
There can be enough bother keeping stone cold sober competitors calm.

To compare football with slot car racing suggests serious disconnection from the world we actually live in and this from the gentleman who, just a few days ago, claimed slot racing was so boring that even the marshalls fall asleep!

Crowd participation?
Shouting and screaming and fighting - oh yes, that will be immensely popular, absolutely wonderful, just what we all need.

Luckily, it's just another surrealist fantasy that hasn't a snowballs' chance in hell of actually happening.

Folk should be a bit more open minded with new ideas.

The internet is barely 15 years old and look at the progress. Mobile phones just 10 years ago were big boxes that cost £1500. Who would have thought 10 years ago that live football in pubs and clubs would take off as it has done?

More and more pubs and clubs are becoming family orientated with such add ons as "Wacky Warehouse". Something that keeps kids coming back with their parents would have a massive appeal to the average landlord and anything that has sizzle will be a winner.

And if it costs several thousand pounds to put a decent set up together so what? The money will be recovered in no time as little Jonny will keep nagging his dad to take the family down the pub! Is dad going to resist?

Some of the race modes are ideal for just such a situation.

Thought that was football (soccer)?

Someone should have told me! Ten years ago, mine was just larger than a deck of playing cards when flipped shut, had Motorola tattoed on it, and cost me about $250 CDN! What the heck WAS I using?

One word, Mope.... "tangents"! They appear not to be your friend! Don't go off on them!

What the hell has the success of eBay got to do with anything?

I bet if Scalextric had the development fund of the Toyota F1 team, they'd be very satisfied indeed too. But that fact has absolutely nothing to do with the thread, not to mention being more obvious than a pink elehant driving a convertable.

QUOTE What the hell has the success of eBay got to do with anything?

In 1999 people said "It'll never work! It'll never work! And so say all of us!"

Especially when they started charging a fee for a listing!

Now that is pretty much how it seems among some members of Slotforum when they start entering into a thread about digital slot car racing.

Normal auctions where you have to actually visit in person and hold a paddle up are as popular as ever, as are car boots. Ebay has not reduced numbers visiting these types of event. If anything it has encouraged more folk than ever to turn out.

And the same analogy will apply to digital slot car racing.

So it has everything to do with technology and the advance of society, and how society reacts to the new ideas.

Lots of new features and racing modes will strike a chord with some people who previously have remained cool to the idea of racing slot cars.

And its nice to see Hugs is back. It took this thread to encourage her to participate rather than lurk and that in itself will make the direction that this thread has taken all worthwhile!
