I was looking for some replacement parts for one of my Pioneer cars and came across this...

I know that "J-Code Specials" are special indeed and fetch £100+ per car but I have never seen a bidding war where the price has gone above £300 or so!!!

This made me think, what is the most expensive slot car ever sold?

Please, don't post links or examples of 'asking price' being set to so and so, as at the end of the day the car is only worth what somebody is willing to pay for it

I think that J Car will go a little higher before sold.

I watched a Cox MIB Chappy go for just over $7,000 USD, and was told that it was not a record for top price.

A Cox 2E 'mag frame' unbuilt mint kit sold for over $12,000 a few years ago on ebay.
A Scalextric C70 Bugatti sold for £5500 just a couple of weeks ago.

Two Scalextric C70 Bugattis sold for high prices on eBay recently, one for £5465.09. The other was advertised at £8795.00 and as it's shown as sold, probably went for an offer somewhere below the advertised price.

Things often sell for stupid money which has no bearing on how good they are, what they were originally for etc.

Why should slot cars be any different?

I don't understand collecting slot cars at all, but lots of people get joy from it and will pay handsomely to do it.

It still has not been proven that the £8795 was genuine or not, from the pictures certain things do not look quite right.

I was just on Amazon looking at the Sora display cases after reading another forum post and one click later saw a GT40 and Lambo for just under 2000 each. I thought what would be so special about these or is it just a trader chancing their arm. I agree with previous posts a car is only worth what you pay for it and I wouldn't pay 2000 for a GT40 and then would you race it if you did! If you wouldn't: what's its point?

Anything over 1000, $ or £, is still fairly rare in the slot car collecting world. I heard a few of the Slot Classics were going far far more a few years ago, but don't know the situation now.

Among the vintage cars, there are a few that have gone for over 5 grand, but very few. A pair of BZ Chaparral 2Es in used condition with boxes went for over $7K last year ... but they were the first genuine production versions ever found (2 more popped up shortly thereafter!).

Guys, we're still small fish in the antique toy pond: the Marklin and other fancy German boats from the early 20th century can go for 50 grand or so, not to mention certain teddy bears, early tinplate toys, etc.

No Bob, I have enough problem writing on the lines without having to go between them!

The jury's still out on whether slots will become a real antique toy for your great grandchildren, or if, when the baby boomers die out in 20 years or so, it will all go in the trash bin without a second thought.

The high-value toys from the early 20th century seem to be contemporary high-value items for rich kids... not sure too many of the rustic toys have either survived or maintained any value, at least from that period.
