Hi Folks,

A friend who is going abroad has left me a box of old Scaley stuff.

I've got a Ferrari 250 GT with what appears to be spots of white mould all over it.

Any ideas for cleaning it up?

I had this on some of my old exin cars they cleaned up with a bit of soap and water ,I think it is something to do with the glue on the decals but I may be wrong

I agree with Graham as I believe its that too. I use T Cut on a very soft cloth. Clean gently and bits you cant get into use a soft tooth brush and yes...toothpaste is a good plastic cleaner too as it helps restore the colour (and your car smells nice too!).

How about domestic mildew remover as sold by Sainsbury's etc......I would try it on an old bit first tho' !. It works on plastic pipe fittings.

I cleaned up an old Scalex Porsche that had no decals etc with warm soapy water first then light going over with Tamiya rubbing compound to take out some slight surface scratches.

Hi John,

One of my favourite aspects of the hobby is restoring old cars.

Completely agree with Jonny S and Grah1, I personally think the milder the chemical so to speak, is always best though.

Start with a soap solution such as a mild washing up detergent, if that won't remove any stubborn staines, i'd then move onto something with abit more umph, so to speak.

T-Cut is good, although never tried toothpaste (will do now) once cleaned, I personally like to follow up with a general polish.

Be careful when washing earlier decalled cars, avoid scrubbing too hard directly on the decals (as they will fade or tear) however, detergent does remove the gunk or old glue surrounding the decals without damaging the decal itself with abit of patience.

Regarding polishing, it is great although time consuming but it can remove light marks/scratches also removes the dullness which effects old neglected cars, restoring the showroom shine.

A BMW which was when first acquired looking very tired, but now IMHO restored to former glory. hoorah

I had this white spotty mold problem with my Scalextric Lister Jaguar which had been stored in various drafty damp garages throughout it's life. In fact the mold was worse on the inside so maybe it fed on oil and dirt! I cleaned it several times over the years but the mold just kept coming back.

Fortunately, a recent strip down, several thorough cleanings with warm soapy water and a nice cosy centrally heated home seems to have cured the problem for now.
