My Solution for Dead Spots
I posted this on another site and felt more folks could benefit from this
I was encountering dead spots on my 80 foot Scalextric classic track and I was doing the screw driver twist in the joints etc. but that was not the solution. I had driven on the track for weeks with no problem. What I did was take a dry Paint Brush with fairly stiff hairs and I brushed out the slot all the way around the lane that was having a problem. What this does is brush out that small strand of braid that comes off of your car and shorts out your track. You can look for hours for this piece of metal between the rails and never see it with the naked eye, but your paintbrush bristles have the best chance of dislodging this small piece of metal fiber that causes so much aggravation. Try this next time your cars begin to slow for now reason. Vacuum is also a solution, but who wants to get that thing out everytime!

That was a great tip Kelly. Though I usually tend to use the vacuum cleaner as Tropi, this will surely be a great option. No risk in "vacuum" up some scenery stuff.
