New Track in Georgia

50753 Views 218 Replies 46 Participants Last post by Nikko
About a year ago I planned on building a large permanent track layout. After many months of waitng for Ninco to come out with their system and many negotiations with my wife about the size and location, (it was originally going to takeup half the garage) the project unfortunatley was put on hold.

The final negotions have been completed and the project is back on in a new location, Albeit a smaller location. This time I have designed a U shaped layout that will include approximately 60' of track. I will try and model some corners from tracks that I like. The Lowes hairpin from Monaco, the Parabolica of Monza, and the Esses from Road Atlanta.

Any feedback from would be welcome.

That is one of the areas I am still trying to work out. I tried as best as I could to get rid of the crossover but due to table limitations, that did not work out. I am going to try something unconventional to get around this because I thought about how difficult a start would be with a bunch of cars racing to go under a tunnel at the first turn. The bottom of the layout will be 6 inches lower than the upper portion with the long straights. So, after the cars make the first turn they will head down hill into a valley where they will begin to climb back up after they cross under the start finish straight. The will continue to rise 1/3 of the way along the back straight. this will give a little hump to the back straight. Hopefully this option will work. I really wont know until I get all my track and start messing around with everything. I noticed last night as I was compiling my parts list that a lot of stuff is becoming scarce. So I am trying to find the best place with the best prices to get everything I need. Hopefully I won't have to wait too long.

I like it a lot. You have left plenty of space for scenery and got a challenging circuit too. I personally like R1s. I've built four 180°s into my circuit and love the challenge of getting round smoothly. Probably harks back to handbrake turns in my rally days.

It looks very 'parallel' in plan but with the elevations that seems to disappear. Maybe there is some element in mine that will help you.

Thanks for the comments. When I was looking over all the tracks on this Forum I noticed your over pass. For some reason it reminds of the overpass where the banking crosses over the track at Monza . I like those interesting bits of track. You have a bit more space on your layout. But your right about a similarity. The 2 long straights followed by a technical seciton. That first hairpin must take getting used to for a first timer at your track.
Well, yes, but the esses slow the cars down in readiness. It's a question of flow through the bends then until you hit the viaduct.
hey Nikko, any progress on the track? I got the majority of my track in last weekend. No digital gear yet.
Hi Nikko,
when I looked at your layout, my first thought was "that's a lot of LC's!!!!".
8 places too change lanes!!!!
And when I looked at Graham's layout, I thought "only 3 LC's???".

But I guess there is no right or wrong for this, you have to follow your heart about it.
But I think too many LC's will give too many cars off the track, when they crash and too few will make it very difficult to overtake!

About the R1's - can't live without them!!!! These curves are a challenge for the drivers!!!!
How late can you brake and how fast can you take the curve?

I had 3 projects to complete before "She Who Must Be Obeyed" will even let me start the track. My wife does not want me ordering stuff that will lay around while I finsih other projects. I finished only one of the following projects this weekend; Finish the trim in the bathroom down stairs, clear out the room for the track and move all the furniture, and build my sons racing simulator. Guess which one I did. You guessed it. the racing simulator. I also had to do a lot of testing to make sure it worked properly.

I am hoping I will get things started by August 1st.

The issue with the LC's is an attempt to create a racing line more than for passing. But when I look at the cost of all those LC's, I can tell you , the wallet starts to hurt. I will most likely go with 3 LC's and increase them as I see fit. I will also move them around to find the best position. I think that I will only know what will work when I get some cars running.

I haven't been able to do a lot of work on the track yet. I am just finishing up the out door projects that were put on hold do to injuries, bad weather, and other scheduled events. Since I can't get the clearance to start construction, that leaves a lot of time to tinker and fiddle with the layout design. The wife has expressed that the track takes up too much room and wanted me to shave off some of the overall table size. So I took a foot off the top portion of the table. This forced me to change the parabolica and tighten it up. I'm not thrilled with the result but I really didn't have much choice. To keep the over all design I was required to make adjustment to the remaining track. It took a while but it seems to flow real nice now. Other than the tightness of the Parabolica the rest of the track is improved. There is a better flow and the cross over section seems to work better.

I hope to start construction next week during the Christmas holiday. Maybe Santa will bring me some track.

FINALLY!!!!

I just placed my order for my track and hope to get everything in a week or so. At the last minute I had to change track systems from N-Digital to Digital 132. Ninco was nearly $200 more than Carrera. So it required me to figure a way to keep the feel of the track and do yet another redesign. I have included a link to the FINAL track layout.

Since I have to wait for my track to get here I am working on the story of my track and naming the turns. A few ideas for turn names are "Big Bend" and "Titan". I am thinking of naming the track "Pine Hollow". I have come up with a logo for the home racing club that will be on a banner over the pit garage. ADC stands for the Average Driving Club. It is an online racing club that I participated in a few years ago. But I thought it would fit well with the concept of my track

Congratulations, It's nice to know that your track will soon be reality . The final plan looks great as does the ADC logo. Please post some pictures of the track once its up and let us know how you like racing on it.

Modern 21st century western men crack me up.

By the way the track config in post #29 was perfect, why did you change it? Nice design indeed.

I'm not really sure why I changed. It. I guess with the 2 straights and the long turn I wanted some more medium to slow turns. But I could change it back once I race on it. That is really the only way to tell what is more fun.

This will be the timing and scoring tower. It was from the Ruoen circuit in France. I just need to scale it to size. I might make it a bit smaller than scale so that it will look less ominous.

Looking great.

From my experience an "L" or "U/J" shaped track can pose vision problems for drivers. If they stand at your start finish line the vision of the track at the bottom will be difficult. You may have this covered with controller points on the ends or along the back straight etc.

I had to change most of my SSD track to rectify this as it was in a confined space. Still trying to find time to finish it!

Cheers OTFS

WOW, Merry Christmas Eh!?!

I have enjoyed your journey immensely!!!!!

From your lengthy "negotiations" (My wife got a a new outfit in our negotiations)… and to the comment about "western" men...ha ha ha ha

I luv it all and think you can have some great landscaping options as well. I too am in an "L" shape and have thought about driver stations site lines....what a great way to spend some free time!!!

Can't wait to see more…

Congrats

This is an alternate version. Is this closer to what you are talking about? I will try both and see which is more fun and challenging to race on
