What other alternatives should I be looking at to help new visitors to my track gain some experience and enjoyment?
Scalextric cars from the era before they were ruined by the addition of high strength neodymium magnets. There are loads to choose from and they're cheap too. Plenty on eBay. Many came fitted with a low strength brown magnet, which is easily removed.
Choose from;
Early Scalextric in-line Nascars with the brown magnets removed (although the cars are quite expensive on eBay; usually £25+)
Scalextric Porsche 962Cs. Plentiful, cheap, robust, come in a variety of liveries and are enjoyable to drive.
Scalextric Sauber Mercedes C9-88
Scalextric Jaguar XJR-9
Scalextric Ferrari 288GTO
Scalextric BMW M1
Scalextric Ferrari F40
Scalextric Lamborghini Diablo
Scalextric Jaguar XJ220C
Scalextric Porsche 911 GT1
Scalextric Subaru Impreza WRC - make sure you buy the early versions with brown magnets, not the later shape models.
Scalextric Toyota Corolla WRC
Scalextric Renault Mégane Maxi
Most of these will have tyres that have a surface that has hardened with age. Good grip can be restored easily by truing using sandpaper.
You can find a comprehensive list of liveries of each car type at www.slotcarportal.com, but here are a few examples:

C189 Sauber Mercedes C9-88
