Taking a brand new car out of its box, you are allowed to true its tyres and oil the axle bearings, gears and motor bearings and no other mods....

What car have YOU found to be:

a. quickest
b. most fun
c. most reliable

and

d. would you recommend to a beginner

I would definately recommend Scalextric.

For the following reasons -

Out of box performance (they are quick), reliability and looks. The only drawback is they are fragile, mainly due to high speeds attained with high magnet racing.

Just to clarify, any of current Scalextric models such as GT40, Mercs & Mini's etc.

Whether they are the most fun... Jury is out.

Straight out of the box, I would have to suggest the Fly Lola B98 as being up there with the quickest. The Motorola car has the Fly Racing motor, which makes it very quick, but even the cars with the standard motor go very well straight out of the box.

As for the reliability angle, I would agree with Jamie about Scalextric cars. As for the most fun...a very tricky one, that. Maybe Scaley NASCARs? Plenty of colour and movement and very damage-resistant!

From recent brand new out-of-the-box racing experiences I would have to say the SCX F1 Jag and the Audi R8 are the quickest and in terms of winning races and staying on the track are tops.

In terms of reliability and probably some fun as well I would go for the old Ninco Maclaren GTR. They just keep on going and you can get some good tail slides out of them.

Fun is difficult to measure as different cars have different charicteristics and although it is fun to win a race easily it's also fun to drive something that won't win but takes some skill in stayng on the track.

I also agree with the above but would like to throw the following into the arena!

Don't take the magnets out of the Scalextric cars if the only mods allowed are the ones you mention. You won't like them.

if you want to use the same formula you mention and also want to try non magnet - I suggest Ninco Classics and out of the latest bunch there is little to touch the 'only just released' Green Jag 120 for looks and they run very sweetly too!

any you thought you were going to get an easy to decide list I bet right?
