This is one of the first kit built slot cars I ever assembled,it is a Monogram Cooper Ford,from about 1965.

Car was brush painted with Testor's Metalic Blue paint,and is essentially unchanged since that time,other than service items.

I raced it hard for several years when it was new,and it has run almost continuosly from that time to the pressent.I even sent it down to the 02 Marconi Proxy race so a bunch of strangers could have a go at thrashing it around.

What Al doesn't tell you is that, as a total stranger on your first visit to his place, he will take any of dozens of such nostalgic pieces off the shelf, discuss the heritage with you, then plop them on his track, and hand you the controller.

After you get over the initial shock of actually driving something you remember from your early teen years, you find yourself grinning from ear to ear.

Running these cars is what Al does... none of them are shelf queens - they get enjoyed as well they should.

This is one of my favorites. I have three of these. Two like this one and one with the flared rear wheel openings. I think it was called a King Cobra. One of these days I'll get around to getting them track ready.

Is that the original motor? I seem to remember an endbell drive 16D in the one I had in the '60s.

What I havn't told you is that as a total friendless recluse, no-one ever comes round to play with my cars. And having sold every last item of slot racing equipment back in 19something-or-other to buy a saxophone, I have been desperately trying to re-create that lost collection in recent years. Hence this fake Monogram Cooper made with a Pactra(?) rip-off vaccie shell. Don't laugh too hard, Al.

It has an anglewinder Mab S with drop arm (!) and MRRC wheels. Very sweet to drive. But I wish I still had my old ones.

There's nothing nicer than driving a 1960s slot car and I covert Al's Cooper but like Howmet all my original stuff disappeared into the ether and I am now trying to recreate some of the cars from my early days.

This is a MRRC shell bought a few months ago which I painted in a style that may have been raced by a small team in the mid sixties.

I fitted the shell to an original Monogram chassis and added Ortmann's.

Here is a Monogram kit shell where I've used the interior.

I used a shortened and narrowed Fly chassis to accomodate the interior. MRRC driver figure, wheels and tyres.

Yes,well spotted,and there is a story attatched.

I was trying to find some cars to send to the 02 Marconi Fest,and,being the weird soul that I am,I purposely try to send totaly non competative stuff that is eithere totaly weird,or different/unusual in some way.

Yes,the car was originally 16D powered,but on rechecking the Rulz,I noticed that the clearance stipulation was 1/8 inch.Not gonna happen with the stock motor,so,after a bit of head scratchin,I remembered seeing where somebody had dropped a 13uo into a Monogram chassis.I plopped it in,and viola,1/8 ground clearance.Have just not bothered to change it back to orriginal.

I kept most of my original slots cars and those I didn't I replaced in the early 80's I also have several of Walkden Fisher's Original slot cars including a lovely detailed Red Scalextric Alfa which he made and a Revell AC Cobra with a fuel filler pipe running down though the hardtop which I have raced many times.

I gave away, or traded/sold all my original cars to make way for the next, greatest car that came along. I probably never had more than 3 or 4 active cars at any one time. And now I have no complete cars from those early days. Why does hindsight always seem to overpower foresight?

Oh wait.... maybe it's just me that suffers from that...

Howmet's vac formed Cobra look's quite good against the Monogram's, just goes to show that if vac formed are done properly they are just as nice and to scale.

Wait a minute! Are you saying the MRRC version has slipped into the market place without me knowing, David? I thought it was still in the pending paddock!

How about a photo of the chassis. I have a spare GB Track 917 that just may work. I'd love to have a full interior. On of my cars is the regular model version with the interior.

Here's a couple of my takes on this one:

This is an old Monogram original that I picked up from e-bay (mainly for the chassis) - the trim was missing so I used a maxi models engine detail and made some pipes from tubing. Looks like we both have the same fantasy team David!

And for Mr M here's a pic of the MRRC version in the livery from the box:

I think I've still got a couple of 'spare' MRRC bodies - if you want one Mr. M then PM or e-mail me and I'm sure it can be arranged!

I second that! We had a Hussein at the Marconi races with a vac body, and it was just beautiful. It depends on who builds the car... in this case, Mark Gussin did a beautiful job too:

Of course, Russell Sheldon has to be the absolute master with his extraordinary Audi R8 "crocodile" which he kindly donated to the Marconi Museum for Kids.

It was fairly crude, I just cut the chassis to the correct wheelbase and then trimmed the width. I made up a plastic mounting plate to fit the rear body posts.
